"Will you marry me?"
Favourite Scene from The Confidant, 2012 [TVB]
The context:
A coup has failed and her son, the Emperor, is safe, but Cixi is horrified at the realization that she can trust no one outside of a select group of servants. She has been betrayed by her brother-in-law, Prince Gong, and his co-consipirator Sing Bo, whom he has just turned on. Prince Gong’s other co-conspirator, the head eunuch Chan Fuk, is able to escape his death penalty for treason by bringing the Emperor back to court and putting on an act of fealty for everyone to see. Despite her efforts to find and save her son, she is unable to get to him once he is rescued, as Ci’an holds onto him in a motherly embrace before his birth mother, Cixi, can. The other princes and all of the courtiers had no intention of saving the Emperor or the Empresses Dowager from the coup and were waiting outside to see if Prince Gong would succeed in overthrowing the regents. Everyone is out to serve their own interests. They apologize profusely for not coming to the Empresses’ aid, but she hears nothing and is visibly shaken. The most powerful woman in China is the most powerless in the Forbidden City, and she leaves the court defeated. To survive, she must re-evaluate everything.
A truly brilliant scene that I hope I did justice to. Seriously though, go watch it on Dramafever (it has official English subs for those who need it) or something.
ending group shot!
final comment: There were some pretty awful character / plot developments, i.e. the cop guy’s downfall, Hugo’s sudden evilness, Veronica stupidly ‘liking’ Hugo, Rosina marrying the cop, I can go on... BUT OVERALL it was an okay + decent show (to TVB standards). Fast-paced action and it had its likeable elements, so I think it’s more good than bad in the end :P
here’s to the end!
“You two should feed each other poop. The audience will definitely give you a ‘like’.”
“Wait, [matching] shirts? And you say there’s nothing going on between you two?”
“Bros gotta support bros...’s father!”
lolwhat XD
“I really don’t know how to lie to [Ruco]!” “Miss, you’re [an old thousand]. Lying is your specialty!”
