MegaTsunami - Would A Mega Tsunami Happen Soon?
Figure 9B: Generation of Tsunami. Tsunamis are formed above subduction zones as a result of the drag and release of the upper plate (red arrows) by the lower one. The overlying ocean water is first pushed away from the shore, only to return as a tsunami. In the case of the Sumatra earthquake, the tsunami was generated about 10 minutes after the earthquake, slamming into the coast of Sumatra just 15 minutes later. (via Physical Geology Today – Tsunami)
