Usually, his words wouldn’t have any effect. She would continue to show the man all the affection that he refused to accept.
This wasn’t one of those times.
Hands shaking ever-so-slightly as she pulled away, head dipping down so that she wouldn’t have to look him in the eye. It took her a moment to respond so she could steel her voice. Keep any tremor that threatened to break it from succeeding.
“You’re right. Sorry, Precht.”
She managed to keep her voice from shaking by keeping it quiet. Nails digging into her palms as she quickly sat down next to the man. Making sure her arm was touching his. That she could still feel that he was here.
That they were there.

Those two words were enough to have her heart flutter, her face growing a darker shade as she quickly looked down so that her hair would block her line of sight. “No it’s-” Resisting the urge to fan her face, her hands fidgeting within her lap. She could still feel where his hand had brushed along her jawline as if little sparks of electricity were dancing just under her skin.
Her face was still hot but she looked up at him, smile growing larger over her lips.
It was hard to turn her emotions into words. The fear that he may slip away, the butterflies that had become a flurry inside her stomach, and the feeling that she wanted him to stay by her side. It was simple to think and even simpler on paper but to get them into words-
Without saying anything else, she reached for his hand. Holding it in both of hers and giving it a small squeeze as if that would be enough to covey everything.

His voice brought her back, taking a step away from the water. The couple still trying to pull themselves out of the water as a crowd seemed to gather. Quickly turning to face the man. Did he hear anything they said? Did he see that she was the one who pushed them?
“I-” Her words seemed frozen, unsure f how to respond. “They were- I couldn’t just-” Each sentence becoming a jumbled mess.
Behind her the two sputtered as they made it back onto dry land. Chancing a glance at the two of them before looking back up into the man’s eye. Her feet becoming planted to the ground as she could hear the murmurs of the citizens grow louder. All with concern for the people who had fell in.
She wanted to run but felt rooted to the spot. Her head hung low, not wanting to explain what they were saying. “I overreacted to something they said about a Fairy Tail member. And pushed them in.” The last words a mumble, keeping her eyes on her feet. It was better than having to tell him those same words she had heard them say. Even if he pushed her, she couldn’t make those words leave her lips. Those words leaving a sour taste in her mouth at just the thought.
This was all she could do. In this case, Mavis was helpless when trying to defend anyone. She couldn’t argue with them, prove them wrong and show them just how wonderful he truly was.
Hands knitting together in front of her, doing her best to keep from wringing them as she grew silent. Lips pursing as the crowd grew more dense around them. At moments like these she wished she could fade away. Hating that she would do something as nasty as to push a person into the water but unable to rid herself of the anger that still lingered behind.

That was rash and irresponsible of her to say. Her lips pursing for a moment as she glanced down carefully considering her own request and his response, choosing her own and trying to figure out the consequences of each. But her strategies failed at situations such as these.
And the consequence of driving him away was scarier than any possibility that may come from it. Her hesitation was enough of an answer.
“I-” She didn’t want to play it off as a joke, her own words becoming a trap that ensnared herself. Cheeks coloring as she glanced away. “Sorry Precht.” A quick bow of her head, bare feet meeting the floor as she dashed towards the pile of books she had started reading. The words had slipped from her mouth the moment she thought them. If she had been more careful.
