I just imagined that Varian must've been exhausted after having crossed half the kingdom on foot during a blizzard he probably fell asleep as he was preparing his future schemes. Also I have this headcanon that he normally just passes out when working on something overnight and that Ruddiger took the habit to put a blanket over him when that happens.

varian was partially raised by a raccoon (it’s a complicated dynamic, but ruddiger has definitely kept him alive at certain points) and i could fully see him sitting his friends down and plucking leaves and twigs out of their hair. grabbing hugo’s hand and picking the dirt from under his nails. making sure they’ve eaten enough and giving them a wide-eyed stare of reproach if they haven’t.

he is a weird little fellow who probably learned more from ruddiger than quirin, and i think we should factor that into his relationships.
