Alchemist's Return To Corona: Be Very Afraid, Part 4
<Previous Next>
Read Be Very Afraid, Part 4/5 from the story Alchemist's Return To Corona by ElizabethShelby (Liz) with 19 reads. varia...
When I say that I’m normal about them just know that I am LYING
i wonder.
varian says, “i thought we said i needed six weeks of solitude to decipher [the demanitus scroll]”.
(and before anyone says it was a joke— yes, it was framed as a joking moment, but it was more centered around varian’s embarrassment at being caught goofing off/a quip about how tunnel-visioned he can get. rapunzel never says “huh? when did we agree on that?”)
now, i think we can all agree that a month and a half of isolation is not a good thing, especially for a teenager, especially for someone who has been through what varian’s been through. i think it’s a generally-acknowledged truth that the last thing he needs is to spend more time in a dark, underground place.
and what about quirin? how does he factor into all this? surely he wants to see his son. (this is what i’m constantly saying about the writing casting quirin in a very bad light, if you stop and think about it. maybe he isn’t a bad parent, but the way he’s handled gives that impression to the nth degree.)
perhaps it’s because corona is still angry with varian— and most of those citizens do have a right to be. however, before that episode, he had competed against them in a treasure hunt and saved them from the red rocks, both of which became public knowledge. (i do know that some episodes were aired out of order, but i’m gauging from what we’re shown.) he should be safe to go outside and do regular things, especially with the princess’ favor.
and what about the princess herself? surely she, of all people, wouldn’t want anyone to feel alone or confined. with her good nature and tendency to meddle, she should be dragging varian to a non-demonic painting class, or something along those lines.
shouldn’t she?
well.
this is where i grin and rub my hands together, because i love rapunzel not addressing the six-weeks thing. i love how she goes down there only when she has a problem with the scroll— at least, as far as we’re shown. (and yes, i mean “love” completely genuinely.)
this is varian we’re talking about. and rapunzel likes varian! he’s endearing and hardworking and sweet and tries his best and is unintentionally funny more often than on purpose… but he’s also conniving, five-steps-ahead, the source of multiple nightmares for her, ruthless, and dangerous.
we never got an onscreen apology from rapunzel or varian, for the hurts they’ve wrought on one another. it makes perfect sense that rapunzel would distance herself from him, at least for part of season three.
she doesn’t want to anger him again. she doesn’t want to fail him again, and, in the process, she’s doing exactly that.
and, for varian, rapunzel is kind and gentle and protective and inspiring… but she’s also neglectful and (in his mind) weak-willed and too powerful for her own good or his own comfort. of course he’d help her, but he’d also withdraw. (staying out of the public eye is an added bonus, because he feels that the other shoe is waiting to drop.)
it’s this awful, muddled mix of them both wanting to reach out, but being held back by too many things.
rapunzel does rescue varian (even if the writing made her priorities look very “yikes” while doing it). varian does translate the scroll, along with helping her in many other aspects.
they’re both good people. good people who don’t know how to fix what already happened.
