Being a relief driver for the engines (PART THREE)
Hello! Here's part three of the relief driver!reader with the diesels. Obv it's not going to be all the diesels in the show because I didn't have time to watch new episodes thanks to academic work but I hope you'll like it!
Engines: "Devious" Diesel, Mavis, Daisy, BoCo, Philip, Paxton, Salty, Sydney
"Diesels sir?"
"Yes exactly! We're pretty short on relief drivers for diesels so I'm asking around if anyone's willing to take the job."
"Well… I don't think it's a bad idea sir, I'll gladly do it."
"Wonderful! Ah, just to remind you, you'll be alone in the cab."
"Oh?"
"Yes, only one worker is needed to drive a diesel. Is there a problem?"
"Not at all sir-"
"Very well! Now off you go!"
Diesel
-You know about him even before you two officially meet: he's a famous one, the Devious Diesel. You either know him for two reason: you've been warned by other engines or you've been on a engine that fell for his devious tricks. You honestly don't know what to think of him.
-He's not too sure about you: if you're new he's slightly annoyed but will let it pass to try to convince you that diesels are better than steamies. But if he has seen you on a steam engine frequently (doesn't matter which one, from the steam team or a new one) he's snappy and rude.
The only instance he could be indifferent about you from the start if you're a worker at the dieselworks/you work frequently with diesels and he has seen you before.
-Being alone in the cab makes it even more difficult: the two of you don't talk for your first day, only doing your job of shunting trucks in the yard and delivering goods. You wonder if he tolerates you or not, the only noises coming from him are grunts and sighs of annoyance.
-But apparently you hear from other diesels when you're getting ready to clock in that it went better that expected because he didn't complain at all during the evening in the sheds. You try to keep that in mind while driving the grumpy diesel.
-One day you're refueling him and make a passing comment about how easy it's for a diesel to function and there's no need to get dirty with coal. He laughs and shudder, clearly enjoying the compliment.
-"Well of course, us Diesels are revolutionaries, more functional and efficient that steamies! You would like to know about it, wouldn't you dear driver?"
-You have to admit he's a smooth talker, and oh he likes to talk a looot. When there's more confidence between the two of you he will talk your ear off while you work. You soon learn he's a very proud diesel (and smart too), someone who won't hesitate to talk about his adventures on the mainland before he came to the island.
-you see that something is bothering him inside, but you decide to wait for him to come to you. It happens one evening when the two of you are coming back from a late job that took too long. It's only you two on the line while he travels towards his shed when he asks you a question. "Why are you kind to me driver?".
-You know that behind that hard face lies a very insecure engine. You know about his so called "devious" history, every engine on the island seemed to look out for you. He knows very well the pain he has caused.
There are looks and whispers when he passes along the line, he sees all of them, but this time it's different, because he has you on board. You reassure him while stroking his control panel that you love your job but to you it doesn't matter if you ride a steamie, an electric or a diesel, you love every engine the same. You don't see but a soft smile stays on his face for the entire ride to the shed.
-When his driver comes back, though he'll never admit it, he would love for you to come back to work with him. You make him promise to not be cheeky to other engines and he does for about a day then he goes back to usual.
Mavis
-She's very happy to meet someone new: at the quarry nothing much happens so this is a nice change for her.
-You'll soon learn she's very different to most diesels: unlike Diesel, Harry and Bert she's friend with a lot of steam engines, especially Toby who takes workers from Knapford to the quarry where she works. She's become an important figure for the many engines who come to deliver or take trucks.
- She runs a tight regime of shunting naughty truck in their places when they're acting silly. She has no mercy and she gets the job done.
-She can get pretty stern and huffy when things aren't done her way or if someone critize her work in any way. SO it's your job to steer her in the right direction to complete her work.
-If the two of you have some down time and, coincidentally, Toby is passing by he'll began to tell you all about young Mavis working for the previous quarry, much to the desperation and blushing of your diesel. You end up teasing her about it multiple times.
-When the two of you are alone she'll confide in you how much she wishes to get out of the quarry sometimes: she's proud of her job but she longs for long trips around the island, see stations and travel alond the sea.
-If she's assigned for some reason to take some trucks outside of the quarry she'll get very excited about it: be prepared for constant questions and observations about the island.
-When it's time for you to leave she's not really happy to ot see you but she's hopeful for another adventure with you!
Daisy
-Now it's complicated with her.
-On one hand she hates the idea of not being able to have her usual driver since they know (or she supposes so) how to treat her delicate form and paint, on the other hand she thinks it's the perfect occasion to show you how far more superior she is (both in beauty and efficiency) than steamies. Unfortunately for her you love all types of engines, so no preference at all.
- She only wants to take passengers and hates with a passion every time she has to take milk's barrels for some reason. She pretends a wash every time she's done because, according to her superior smelling nose, she smells like a cow.
You're not too sure about it but comply anyway. You don't want to end up on her bad side, trust.
-Being on the Harwick line is one of the greatest things for you: the sea breeze is amazing and the seaside is always bustling with activity and tourists. She also think it's amazing, only when it's sunny tho (she thinks the bad weather and the sea air damages her delicate features).
- She can be pretty lazy, something that can't be allowed on the railway during busy hours. You promise her leisure time to talk your ear off about whatever she wanted once her duties are fulfilled.
-She prides herself of being a Diesel railcar, but sometimes too much, especially when putting down other engines (mainly other diesels). You try to remind her that everybody is useful as much as they can and no engine is inherently under her just because they can't carry passengers/need coaches to do so.
-She's a self proclaimed diva and will talk endlessly about cultural events and gossips that happen on the island: you have to admit that is a nice change.
-Spoiler alert: you'll have to help her out with her makeup in the morning, making sure is not smudged or undone
-When her driver comes back she's so focused on telling them about how the week went that she forgets about you. Sorry not sorry.
BoCo
-He's probably heard of you thanks to the steam engines and isn't worried at all at the change of driver. He's pretty trusting of the workers on the railway so no complaints from him!
-He's the chillest diesel out of everybody on the list: he's serious about his work on the railway but he throws puns and jokes sometimes to break the tension.
-Automatically if you're Boco's driver you'll end up seeing Edward a lot. Not that you mind, you soon discover what a great and deep friendship they have going on.
Unfortunately you'll also be around Ben and Bill most of the time, so prepare yourself some medicine for the headache those two tank engines will become.
- You can see he tries to be stern with them, descalating whatever conflict they might be having in favour of being productive, but you can see how much he likes and cares for them
-He'll never take down the chance to fight for his friends, showing how steamies and diesels don't always need to enter a conflict over stupid things.
-He's well liked over the entire island as one of the best workers on the island, so versatile and hardworking; this is mainly one of the reasons he pulls trains on the mainline.
-He likes talking to you during breaks: like the others he's very curious about humans and will be also open to answer some of the questions you might have for him. He's a great listener overall.
-When your time is up he'll be a little sad but he knows he'll see you again on the railway.
Philip
-Oh gosh a new friend! Hello!
-He's the sweetest chatterbox you'll find in the yard at Knapford Station! He's excited to have you aboard and show you around. He'll introduce you to everyone he meets during his shifts, all cheerful and happy.
-He's really curious about you and will frequently ask about you and your life outside of your job
-He loves racing other engines and is always ready to do some. Of course you remind him that he needs to be completely free from important tasks before rushing off for a race.
-His jobs mainly consist of shunting in Knapford's Yard, taking trucks away and getting coaches to the station for the trains to depart. It's pretty boring for the most part you he tries to make it fun, playing games and bashing the trucks into place.
-He's just so excited sometimes that you just can't control him and he moves on his own. It does happen when he's happy or extremely nervous, which means that you or Edward need to redirect his focus back to something to calm him down and resume whatever you were doing.
-He talks, a lot! Edward tells you the time when he almost caused an accident because Philip didn't let him sleep with his chatter. the little boxcab blushes so much that it makes you laughs. Either way he's great company, especially if you're a good listener.
-When your time is done he's pretty sad to see you go but will lighten up as soon as he sees you again on the railway.
Paxton
-He's happy to have you on board!
-As they tell us he's one of the friendliest diesel on the Island and, much like Thomas, if you're his driver you'll soon be friend with most engines on Sodor!
-Most of his work consist of shunting trucks in the yard, getting coaches ready for the big engines and taking trains across the island. He's always busy and has a pretty tight schedule to follow so you're always busy doing something.
-He likes to chat during long travels and playing games along the way. Since you're the only one who will listen to him (because the truck only like to be mischevious) you're his playing buddy for the week.
-He tries so hard to be useful but sometimes it gets too much since some engine take advantage of his kindness to give him their workload. Fortunately there's you and the other workers who can stand up for him (he's really grateful about it).
-He's loved by most engines but there's someone (DIESEL) who likes to play pranks and silly jokes on him. Paxton just laughs and forgets him easily. You don't. Suddenly Diesel is without fuel and his new wheels are gone (obv a joke, you'll get fired if you do, it's just a thought).
-When his driver's back and you need to go he's happy but will miss you, probably will ask for you again.
Salty
-Oh don't take me away from the sea!
-He's pumped to have you on board! A new friend and ear that will listen to his stories (of course he'll immediately call you matey, there's no discussion).
-Like Paxton he's one of the friendliest diesels on the Island and the most loved, considering he works in one of the busiest places on the island. All you can see are engines who deeply respect him and his work, so you'll get to know everybody slowly thanks to him introducing you to anyone who hasn't met you before.
- Down at the docks one thing that's super important is being efficient and fast to load and unload engines, shunting in the right places so concentration need to be high. Salty, Porter and Cranky run a tight ship over there and manage to do their job as best as they can, obviously not without some mishap happening at least once.
-Like Porter he begs you to stay a bit after work to listen to his stories about his time by the sea and on the mainland wherever he was before coming to Sodor. It's a very nice moment between the dock's crew that makes the long work hours all worth it.
-If it happens that he needs to have maintenance done he'll play it off most of the time but you convince him to go get a check up at the dieselworks: he's always scared about going away from the docks because he fears that Sir Thopam (the captain of the ship as he calls him) will send him back at the quarry. You and Porter do your best to reassure him that it's really important to be on top of his health to be very useful.
-You can tell that he cares about his work and his coworkers very much, he's an unstoppable force and it's very contagious.
-When it's time for you to go he's a bit sad but he promises you that you'll always welcome down at the docks with everybody. You'll likely meet him again if you happen do drive and engine who's heading for the docks.
Sydney
-He actually forgets that his driver got sick and is pretty confused as to why you're here trying to climb into his cab to begin work. He panics. Everybody panics. You have a heart attack.
You'll need to remind him every day that his driver is coming back in a week (he'll forget).
-Your jobs is pretty heavy, taking trucks from and to the mainland. You have to help him navigate each day the route because he doesn't remember where to go.
-But he's a real sweetheart and funny guy otherwise: he cares a lot for his friends and likes to talk to you about even the smallest things.
-He gets teased a lot by the other diesels sometimes because of his forgetful nature and you can tell that he feels ashamed by it, but it's not something he can control. You reassure him as many times as he needs to hear it.
-He loves talking about humans and he's curious about what you do when you're not driving enginges.
-One day he asks you how he can be better at remembering stuff and you support him by teaching him many strategies he can use to remember what trucks he needs to pick up and the schedule for the day. You reassure him that if he forgets there's always his driver to remind and care for him on the rails.
-You feel very responsible towards him: he can't really decipher his internal needs, often leading to him breaking down or stopping because he forgot to fuel up. You drivers do a lot to help him.
-When you leave he thanks you profusely for your help and says he won't forget you.
You smile widely when he doesn't.
