For an extremely long time, the Aeternae were stuck in the same rut as most of the original inhabitants of their home, Nidus. Knowledge about inbreeding kept the numbers of the Aeternae low, in dozens or so more, for ages, as this was a very fair thing to worry about. Upon the discovery a "current of rebirth" known as Flux, things would eventually change. Before that, the Aeternae mostly inhabited the megacontinent Taruma with their fellow, local humans, rarely visiting the other great-yet-smaller continent Hollay. Upon detection of the very faint sensations of it's existence somewhere, they followed the sensations of the Flux away from the human continents, ending up exploring the oceans to find a curious and smaller landscape. This would be Nexus at a later date. They did not desert the other continents yet for the sake of Nexus, but would begin their commitment to it for the future of the Aeternae. Several hundred years of exploration of this new.... thing.... was required for them to come to conclusions they'd base some of their important behaviours over. This may influence them forevermore. When a demon dies, their soul connected to the Flux, would travel and follow its directions to a specific point of space and time, and be reborn again in 100 years time. That is the basic gist of it, but on the other hand there are additional effects to the Aeternae; one of which is the scrambling their DNA and inheritable traits. This accidentally solves the inbreeding issue, and boosted their populations slowly to the current proportions of thousands over time. They have always had hard time categorizing Flux with science, but it's workings seem to be extremely stable and timely, having reasonably easy patterns to follow. They can track causes and effects, but what it's true nature is even has the Archdemons stumped. What happened before the Flux discovery? Any dead would still travel within the Flux, and be temporarily doomed to stay there, in an unfortunate loop of rebirth and near immediate death for a good long while. Caretakers for the reborn are extremely important. Very few demons died those days though. The difference in between the mights of the peoples, and certain predators, wouldn't often be enough to kill someone outright. Though it was still very painful to be half-eaten by a Lunar Beast. That became quite long. I like thinking about Flux-Demon relationship. More to come.
