Hello! I am begging for help if anyone knows anything about this topic - I have seen a lot of sources on the web describe legendary beasts that were supposedly encountered by Alexander the Great in India, called Aeternae. I can find no actual ancient source for this information. The oldest I could find was "The history of four-footed beasts and serpents" by Edward Topsell, a book about animals from 1658, which doesn't even use the term Aeternae, and just says that Alexander the Great encountered antelopes in India. A couple other books from 2000 and 2005 (mentioned on the [very short] Wikipedia article for Aeternae) are the earliest sources I could find using the term. Every other source seems to be just listicle AI clickbait type things. Does anyone know where this comes from, or if there are any sources even remotely closer to the time period describing this? Thank you!!
Edit: I found a few older sources. The oldest mention I found of the name "Aeternae" is from the 1972 book "A dictionary of fabulous beasts" by Anne Riches and Richard Barber, which cites "Traditions teratologiques" by Jules Berger de Xivrey, a 1836 book which is, unfortunately, written in French, which I do not speak. I was able to gleam that Xivrey further cites "Speculum historiale", a 1494 speculative history by French friar Vincent de Beauvais, about Alexander's travels in India. If anyone out there can read French, I would greatly appreciate help in looking through these books.
