Tuliptree or Yellow Poplar. Liriodendron tulipifera. If you are a honeybeeist you know that this is your last big nectar producer of the spring and, as a tree, it can dominate nectar availability in forests at that time of year (earlier in the season it is usually dominated by the spring wildflowers/shrubs of the understory). Deciduous forests, not fields, are where the action is in the spring in many Eastern habitats. Of course, the native bee species are attracted to this tree too (or else why would the tree bother with all this nectar production?), but ... what are they? Darn it, as far as I can tell from the weak literature and specimen label data, we really don't know, but it must be big! Darn those tall trees. Picture and specimen by Helen Lowe Metzman.

How are you holding up? I hope you’re safe and healthy! 🤗 Good grief, can you believe another week of this madness has passed? 🗓 It’s my final weekend of spring break. 🌿 I haven’t used my time very wisely. ⏱ In fact I’ve been easily distracted, 👀 cleaning things that haven’t been cleaned, in some cases, ever. 🧹Has this happened to you? The first 10 days after a friend died of coronavirus🦠 I could scarcely eat. 😦 I’ve been reducing anxiety by cooking and baking 🍛🥧 which is therapeutic and my family has enjoyed it. 👌 I’ve told myself it’s OK to do these things instead making progress on my book. 📝 Not good. 🙁 Five people I’ve contacted haven’t yet responded🖐, so that’s been part of my excuse. I had an emergency last week ⚠️ and missed my weekly call with my editor 📞 so I feel guilty about that. But I’ve been making progress! It’s just not ready for prime time. 🔏 A friend, Deliane, volunteered to make masks for a local hospital 🏩 but a local manufacturer stepped up, making tens of thousands. So she wanted to do something to help and asked friends if she could make some for us? 👭🧍🏻👫🧍🏻♂️ She bought the materials and made hundreds 😷 (even including the little metal piece that forms around your nose) and had another friend deliver them. They’re in the final shot of my series. 🎞 Have you been connecting with friends? 👥Yesterday I had a great chat with my BFF, Paula, and today caught up with @dianebrogan and @stephenbrogan on Facetime. 💻 How are you coping? Are you able to #WorkFromHome? 🏠 Are you starting to feel like this is never going to END? 🛑 The news says it’s still going to get worse before it gets better. 😱 #Stayhome and wishing you and your significant others to stay safe and well. 💪 #Camellias #flowers #Flowersofinstagram #flowerstagram #tuliptree #magnolia #tulipmagnolia #springinSeattle #centraldistrict #facemasks #coronavirus #covid19 #seattle #washingtonstate #wfh #Keepitclean #washyourhands #stayhomestaysafe https://www.instagram.com/p/B-jOdmGArZh/?igshid=1r7mkbauek80e
