The attack, carried out by thousands of white Tulsians on the ground and from private aircraft, destroyed more than 35 square blocks of the Greenwood district. Home to the prosperous 'Black Wall Street.'
According to a later Red Cross estimate, some 1,256 houses were burned; 215 others were looted but not torched. Two newspapers, a school, a library, a hospital, churches, hotels, stores and many other black-owned businesses were among the buildings destroyed or damaged by fire.
The “official” tally of deaths in the massacre was 36 people killed, including 10 whites.36 total; 26 black and 10 white (1921 records)
150–200 black and 50 white (1921 estimate by W.F. White)
39 confirmed, 75–100 to 150–300 estimated (2001 commission)
With 800+ injured and thousands left homeless it remains the second deadliest incident of racial violence following only the New York City Draft Riots where 119 people were killed when an angry white mob turned on the black population. Union Army soldiers had to be called away from the Civil War to stop the violence.
The estimated numbered killed is 300 (with 30 being the official count by the town but everyone knows that’s a lie). The story is even more terrifying and heartbreaking than this excerpt. Please teach this to your friends and family. And let’s get this clear - it was a massacre NOT a riot. Insurance companies labeled it a riot so it wouldn’t have to cover the businesses of the first ever Black Wall Street. (Source 1) (Source 2)
Olivia Hooker is the last surviving witness to the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921.
On May 31, 1921, Olivia Hooker was six-years-old when white mobs launched an attack on the Greenwood section of Tulsa, Oklahoma. In less than 24 hours, the mobs destroyed more than 1,000 homes and businesses. It’s estimated as many as 300 people were killed. The Tulsa Race Riot is considered one of the worst incidents of racial violence in American history.
For decades, the events of 1921 were rarely discussed or taught in school. But in 1971, Impact Magazine editor Don Ross published one of the first accounts of the race riots in nearly 50 years. He went on to become a state representative and, along with State Senator Maxine Horner, is credited with bringing national attention to the buried history. Olivia Hooker, now 103, is the last surviving witness to the events of that day.
