No. 88: Leftovers (December 1, 2013)
Wow, I think this is the most disappointing drink of this experiment so far. I was just crushed when I took the first sip. You, upon reading the ingredient list, may be less surprised than I was that it was terrible.
As mentioned below in No. 87: Cran Cherry, I had been plotting a Thanksgiving drink for a few days. I had the brilliant (editor: not) idea of making Thanksgiving in a glass. I thought about what flavors I loved from Thanksgiving and how a sandwich the next day made from lots of bits and pieces of the dinner is so very delicious. “Viola!” thought I. “Instead of a sandwich, I will make a drink of all my favorite bits and pieces of Thanksgiving dinner!” Very smugly, I reached for the Porthole from the Maid of Honor, and lovingly prepared ingredients for a special Thanksgiving infusion.
Cranberries braised in bourbon.
Roasted local pumpkin.
Apple carefully selected from the farmer’s market. (See below for the combination in the Porthole)
I had repeatedly wanted to do a fancy rim on a glass (as I did on No. 9: Golden Claw), but it’s a bit of work and I am lazy. But on this occasion, it was going to be a grand drink which needed a grand presentation, so I wanted to have a rimmed glass. I had the brilliant (editor: not) idea of having the turkey flavor contained in the rim. And my beloved mashed potatoes? They could be on the rim too!
Oy freaking vey.
Rub glass rim with turkey, then dip rim in mashed potatoes to coat thoroughly
2 oz bourbon infused for a week with roasted pumpkin, braised cranberries and raw apple
squeeze of orange juice
dash cranberry bitters
My main comment in my drinks notebook: “this is terrible!”
Okay, where to start? First, I let the bourbon infuse for too long (I had planned to make the drinks on the Friday after Thanksgiving (that day needs a better name than Black Friday), but for many reasons that didn’t happen, so the bourbon infused for a week instead of two days). Second, the combination of roast pumpkin, braised cranberries and raw apple isn’t all that great for an infusion. One or more of the ingredients needed spice or sugar or to just not be there, I’m not sure which. Third, the infused bourbon alone was not sufficient to make a tasty drink. The added orange juice wasn’t enough to make it tasty; I should have either added more juice or added another ingredient to round out the flavor. Cointreau, my go-to flavor booster? Carpano Antica sweet vermouth because it's delicious? Gin, to get some of those herbal notes in there? As I was making the drink, I deliberately did not add any additional spirits because I didn’t want to “ruin” the combination, but, man I should have. I could not have ruined it more than it already was.
My husband’s comment, as he choked down his one and only sip: “The mashed potatoes are really good, though.”
