lightbulb moment question finally answered after five years of wondering what the fuck my english teacher meant when she said (about the great gatsby) "my daughter read it in high school and hated it, and then she read it again and still didn't like it, and then she read it in university and then she loved it." and i never understood what she meant by that. and it bugged me, i think, because i wanted to know why i didn't love it.

and im rereading it now, for the third time, in university, and i get it. like im 20 pages in and im like snickering like a gremlin because i get it now. and i mean that in a way where i understand the point, i finally get the abstract, and i think that's fascinating, because it means that my brain grew, that it did brain things, and you dont always get the luxury of noticing that. because when you do notice it's kind of this fleeting moment of self awareness where you're like "i guess it does do something". im looking at all my little high school footnotes, and i've been erasing half of them because i now know what the words mean, or i realize i just didn't get a line, or a joke, and that's cool because it feels like im kind of,,,holding my younger self's hand and pointing and going "woah look!" in the same way you show a kid a squirrel in a tree on a hiking trip.
