TVd 1x03: Review
The opening of this episode is just horrifying, with Caroline sleeping with that bite on her neck, and then when she tries to run, the way Damon throws her. She was so terrified. That was actually one of the grossest things.
Why is the thing between Jeremy and Vicki still there? It’s annoying in every episode.
Elena saying to Bonnie that she is feeling better and that Stefan is a big part of that, I love the fact how open she is with everyone about her feelings for Stefan and how much she acknowledges what he has brought into her life without any hesitation.
Matt really doesn’t do that jealous ex-boyfriend caring-about-Elena thing convincingly. He only works convincingly as a friend, really.
Stefan catching that football Tyler threw, Elena is totally giving the “that’s my boyfriend and he’s pretty damn cool” look. Her eyes genuinely widen and shine.
Stefan explaining the history of the Salem witches to Bonnie, I needed more of these two, and Season 1 in general giving us more of the history. Also, every time Bonnie and Stefan interact, there always feels like there’s something more there( I would have done anything to get Stefan away from Caroline and put him with Bonnie because these two legitimately had chemistry their interactions, gazes just have something which is another topic anyway.)
Damon interrupting their dinner with Caroline. This man can’t even be a little mature.
The kitchen scene between Damon and Elena, I don’t find anything interesting about it either. Damon bringing up her quitting cheerleading or Elena apologising about Katherine to him isn’t anything new. She apologised to Stefan in the previous episode too. Damon didn’t even stay around long enough to observe Elena quitting cheerleading anyway. Also, when she says, “You lost her too,” she’s sympathising with both brothers over a shared experience and concern, not expressing any special emotion toward Damon.
For those who say Stefan didn’t do anything to stop Damon from abusing Caroline, he only figures out that Damon is abusing her in this episode. The exact moment he realises it, he tells Damon, “She is not a puppet.” He knows that whatever he does to stop him, Damon is going to do whatever he wants anyway.
The dream Damon gives Elena about her and Stefan, well now that’s what I call inserting yourself into someone’s life. Those who say Damon never inserted himself or manipulated situations, but giving a girl this sort of dream and terrorising her with your face at the end of it isn’t inserting yourself? That’s gross.
Apart from the context of the dream, though, the dobsely chemistry was just too much. The gaze Stefan gives her is insane.
Stefan saying
“There must be a shred of humanity left inside my brother. How do I make him see it?”
Now, for those who think Elena was the first person to recognise that Damon had love, humanity, and the ability to care, Stefan had been saying that long before Elena. Elena was simply recognising things Stefan had already been recognising and pointing out.
When Stefan goes to Elena and encourages her about cheerleading, the way she looks at him, she clearly loves the way he encourages her. Also, Stefan giving her the necklace remains one of their most beautiful scenes. The smiles they give each other, their compatibility, the way they push each other toward good things. Stefan calling them both works in progress because they’re getting to know each other. Elena pushing Stefan to join football, Stefan pushing Elena to get back into cheerleading. This is their development.
That Jeremy and Tyler fight. Elena, your brother needs therapy. Can she stop looking at him every time he lashes out and take him to therapy like really.
Damon compelling Elena to kiss him. This man legitimately inserted himself three times in just one episode, and then one last time at the end when he gets into her room and watches her sleep. Tell me what feels more like the actual definition of stalking and inserting yourself into someone’s life than that.
“And you hate me because you loved her, and you torture me because you still do.”
Speak louder, Stefan.
This is just Damon being petty and childish because he can’t handle anything. It’s also a fact that he promised Stefan an eternity of misery, and we all know it wasn’t because Stefan turned him. It was because of Katherine. Hating and torturing your brother over a girl who had already dumped you is ridiculous. Stefan is sick of it, and Damon should be too. He’s the older brother, yet he can’t get over his own juvenile behaviour.
Damon killing Tanner just because Stefan rubbed the truth in his face, simply to prove that he has no emotions. That’s not character complexity. That’s a man-child who can’t handle the truth about himself.
That Matt and Stefan interaction was good. I wouldn’t have objected to their friendship.
The Stelena hug. It was their first, and it still remains one of my favourites. The way they first touch their foreheads together and then hug each other to make sure they’re okay. That’s also very much their thing throughout the series.
The ending of the episode with Damon in Elena’s room is still creepy. Just leave her alone, Damon. He is only getting more uncomfortable and unsettling. I also just loved the Stelena development in this episode.
