TVD 1x04: Review
The opening with dream Damon giving Stefan visions of Elena watching the news and being terrified really highlights something that keeps coming up with Damon. Whenever he wants to torment or punish Stefan, he uses Elena. He knows exactly how much she means to Stefan, so he constantly uses her as a way to get to him. At the same time, he still has to toy with Elena herself. How can someone be like this with their own brother? Come on, Damon, he’s your brother. Move on from your Petrova obsession.
Damon saying, “Some girls can’t resist my good looks and my charm.” Well, Damon, every girl who has been with you has been compelled by you at some point, including Elena with the sire bond involved later on. That line always feels ironic.
Elena bringing Stefan into the house and then kissing him in the hallway while Jenna is still around was cute. Then she practically drags him toward the bedroom while the door is still open. They were so open about their love. It felt like they genuinely didn’t care about anything else when they were together. I also liked how Stefan’s veins started showing. The show established that vampires can start showing those characteristics when they get excited, and Stefan really had to pull himself away. Elena’s look afterward was adorable, especially when she says, “Press pause.” She completely understands how affected they both get when they’re around each other.
Caroline noticing the bite while Damon is sitting right there on the bed is honestly disgusting. No matter what Damon did later that made Caroline forgive him, this is still something the show should never have brushed aside. I don’t understand how someone could forgive that kind of abuse, regardless of any good things that happened afterward.
When Caroline says, “Damon is not dangerous,” it’s only because she has no idea what he’s actually doing to her.
Damon saying, “Why he(Stefan) wants to go to high school is beyond me.” Well, Damon, it’s still better than sitting around doing nothing except compelling people, preying on girls, and tormenting your brother as a pastime.
Bonnie telling Elena that Stefan got between Damon and Katherine and manipulated her into breaking them apart is especially frustrating because that information came from Caroline, who got it from Damon. Once again, Damon is twisting the story to suit himself.
The scene of Stefan and Elena walking together, him whispering something to her before kissing her while Damon watches from a distance, was really cute.
Damon saying, “My therapist says I’m acting out, trying to punish Stefan.” He’s not a hurt teenage boy. He’s over 100 years old. The fact that he’s still behaving like this because of his issues with Stefan is honestly ridiculous.
Tyler really brought Vicki to the party?
Stefan and Caroline dancing together is funny in hindsight. They should’ve realized at that point that they were always meant to be friends.
Caroline saying, “They look so cute together,” while watching Stefan and Elena dance was absolutely right. They always do.
Lol Logan and Jenna being a thing completely slipped my mind. I always rememberd Alaric as Jenna’s main love interest.
Elena: “He even apologized and explained why he is the way he is.” She should remember that he literally tried to kiss her in the previous episode before forming friendly opinions about him.
Also during the dance, Elena asks Stefan about Katherine and his life. The thing is, Stefan genuinely looks uneasy and almost terrified when Katherine is mentioned. Every time people criticize him for lying, they need to look at how he reacts in these moments and how anxious he becomes. It’s not that he wants to lie. It’s that those memories are something he’s still repressing, and they make it difficult for him to talk about his history with Katherine. To Stefan, she isn’t someone he loved. She remains a dark part of his life, and before he can reveal that part of himself to Elena, he needs to be ready.
First, he has to feel prepared and less terrified of those truths before he can bring himself to talk about them. That’s why he even tells Elena that he wants to tell her the truth but he may never be able to share that truth. It’s not because he wants to keep deceiving her, but because he doesn’t believe he can bear those memories that still agonize him. He wants to share things with Elena, but this is something he’s still protective of right now. It’s more about Stefan’s own dilemma. He doesn’t want to revisit or reopen that part of his past, even though he wants to tell her. At this moment, his fear is what’s restricting him and also his desire to protect Elena from the consequences of that truth.
Also, the way Elena argues that she doesn’t know anything about Stefan and only knows what other people tell her is interesting, especially when you compare it to later seasons. Later, she says that she knows him better than anyone else, and honestly, that’s their development i admire the most.
Elena threatening Damon and then going to Stefan to get him arrested. She honestly should’ve just gone to Liz and told her directly instead of asking these boys.
Stefan spiking Caroline’s drink with vervain and then trapping Damon. He’s trying to protect everyone, and this episode really reinforced many of the reasons why I never liked Damon.
