around my early 20s i had this "big" discovery, a personal mental health revelation of sorts: everyone's a hypocrite.
meaning when you reach adulthood, black and white thinking no longer cuts it. everybody's got bills to pay and loved ones to worry about, and it is really okay, albeit a little sad, to sometimes go against your principles. shit ain't always gonna be ideal.
nearing my 30s now i think the new discovery is: everyone is cringe.
and it's okay.
every person sometimes finds themselves in an awkward situation, or says the wrong thing. nobody really cares.
other people's opinions are just that. there are many different preferences in music, movies, clothes, etc., and none of them are actually better than others.
do your thing and hold on to your preferences and values. check yourself, but don't go doubting and undermining yourself for no good reason. support yourself. that's the job.
* of course, those are just funny generalizations. this ain't about overcoming biases which is something i'm definitely working on, or bigots with authority who think they have some moral right to take away other people's human rights. this is just about normal people and our gay little lives.
