This poem was written by Richard Matheson, the future author of I Am Legend, What Dreams May Come, and lots of Twilight Zone episodes. He recited a bit of the poem in an interview that he did once.

Why do american schools just lie about random shit? columbus for example like ok not telling you he commited genocide thats like a racist thing. Which sucks but there is a reasoning(a shit one). but shit like “people thought the world was flat and columbus proved them wrong.” Why do they lie about it?? like i cant thing of a reason for that??? Pre-contact Native American Demography

Estimates of the number of Native Americans vary, but all agree that the land was home to, at a minimum, tens of millions of people. In 1492, estimates range for a Native population from 50 million to over 100 million. The indigenous population of the United States ranges from 4 to 18 million, while the indigenous population of Canada was as much as 2 million.

One interesting point--this was likely not the highest Native American population. That was 5,000 years ago, well before Columbus arrived in 1492.

It was after Columbus, however, that numbers began to drop steeply. Historians agree that the actions of settlers, especially disease and violence, killed about 90% of Native Americans (totaling about 10% of the population of the entire world, at that time).

It is important to understand that the diseases traveled much faster than the Europeans, so many estimates by Europeans contacting a tribe for the first time were after the effects of the epidemic. Colonizers found what appeared to be ghost towns--abandoned villages, human remains scattered around, and occasionally a few survivors bearing the marks of having had a terrible disease (George Vancouver exploring Puget Sound writes about this).
