Yo Bee I know this is literally not what you asked for at all, but could I ask your headcanon on how Hermann got his disability ? (Sorry if you've already posted about this aaa) I realized that the robot the boy found in Anchorage is also seen played with by Hermann in the drift sequence, so I think that he was either in Anchorage or along the Pacific coast somewhere when a kaiju attack hit. What do you think ? <: I am curious...!
Now, the Anchorage thing for starters - I think that’s actually not true, though I understand why it seems like it is, and that was a slip on the movie’s part tbh. Actually in the drift sequence both those kids are Hermann, with the robot and the plane - almost positive it’s unrelated to the kid in Anchorage. I assume they put a bunch of toy robots in the movie as an homage to the jaegers (the kid / grandpa find the jaeger, Hermann grows up to code jaegers, etc). Kind of confusing though.
As for Hermann’s disability, it’s hard to know for sure of course. I think the theory that he has MS has a lot of viable evidence to back it up, most notably the vision test in the drift sequence (often the first symptoms of MS are vision problems), the fact that he doesn’t seem to have the disability as a kid (MS usually doesn’t start affecting people until mid 20s or later), and I think people have noted that the way he uses the cane doesn’t seem symptomatic of an injury (though I’m not qualified to say this).
