The Letter and The Mother

We know that Carl’s letter was about Negan and his redemption. But for me, this scene was mostly one last proof of the deep bond between Carl and Michonne.

Michonne goes alone, potentially endangering herself in wartime to read this letter.

I saw in her action a last symbol of their relationship, of what they were for each other, of what he saw in her. It was a lot easier to give Enid her letter or to convince Rick to read his, but Negan is their enemy, the man killed a part of their family and destroyed their house. Yet she did it and this is an act of love. A mother who fights against her own will, her own anger to respect the last wishes of her son.

A mother… Some do not see this connection. But this letter was there to remind us, to repeat that Michonne has always acted as a mother figure for him, putting his needs before hers.

It’s not for nothing that she is the one who pronounces his name in every episode since his death. She is the one who pays homage to who he was and what he wanted. And that's why this letter is important not only for its content or for Negan but because it is Michonne who reads it. She does what a mother would do. And this scene reminds us that from the beginning they found in each other what this new world had taken away from them because Michonne knew Carl perfectly, sometimes even better than Rick.

She knew how to reprimand him when he went beyond the bounds

She knew how to make him smile even when their situation was critical 

She knew how to help him deal with his grief by revealing a part of her past

She knew how to comfort him when he needed by words, by a kiss or by a hug.

She knew how to remind him that he was a teenager without belittling him

She thought of his safety before thinking of hers

She knew how to value him and encourage him

 She knew how to reassure him when he doubted

She loved him as much as he loved her

She always knew how to be a mother to him when he was alive, and she knows how to be his mother even after his death. And for me that was what the letter was about: one last time, she put his needs before hers by going to read this letter in spite of the risks.

THE WALKING DEAD 8x15 “Worth” airs tonight at 9pm on AMC

rick finally reading that letter was closure for him in terms of carl’s death. of course he’ll need time to heal properly but from a meta pov it was very much closure.

the point of the episode in terms of rick was finding some peace in carl’s words, to be reminded he can still work towards a better future, that he shouldn’t get consumed by grief & that he can’t hide from the pain anymore. rick’s problem a lot of the time has been allowing emotions to dictate his decisions. sometimes “the heart choice” is the one that’ll have someone making rash decisions.

so michonne found the letter that carl wrote to negan (there’s a reason it didn’t get thrown out) which i was very satisfied by.  the writers could have easily made it so michonne tossed it but she didn’t. since she put carl’s wishes over her own, she took the chance to read that letter to negan over the walkie talkies.

obviously it went over as she likely expected it would, though one thing to note is how she actually tried. this past season i have noticed michonne has backed out of reckless decisions.  meanwhile *almost* everyone else has done stupid shit without taking the aftermath into account. 

michonne very obviously didn’t want this, just like carl didn’t actually want this war. so back to her reading that letter to negan, she did it for carl but she also did it in hopes it would sway negan.

the situation at the sanctuary finally came to an end, at least when it comes to simon. i noticed majority of the episode that dwight seemed so conflicted. this could have easily just been me but why not let simon kill negan? it seems everyone who claims to want negan can’t just kill him, hmmmm *pretends to be surprised* i wonder why he’s still alive. majority of the time people writing an episode don’t just make characters do illogical things for no reason. unless they happen to be shitty writers.

negan won’t die in the finale, while some definitely want this, it won’t happen. for most of us comic readers (depending on where someone is at in the comics) we’re aware of what happens to comic!negan.

*comic spoilers below*

in the comics rick manipulates negan last minute & then (non-fatally) slits his throat, rick gets his leg broken & rick is able to end the war successfully. the whole point of rick not killing negan off in the comics is vastly different than the show. obviously it will be to prove a point but it also be for carl since his dying wish was for the war to not turn into a bigger blood bath.

for rick to kill off negan would make 0 sense in terms of the story line, it would throw off SO many upcoming events. i don’t even just say this from a negan fan pov either.

the point is that negan’s death would go entirely against what the point of this whole season has been centered around.
