Spoiler talk and junk for TWD: New Frontier because I have a lot of disappointment
So from what I’ve played of TWDNF (I’ve yet to beat the second episode but I’ve gotten a pretty good idea at this point), there are two VERY distinct things that bother me. A LOT.
One: KENNY. Kenny, Kenny, fucking Kenny. I have a love hate relationship with this character. I hate him when he’s being an ass but in other times, I love him for how loyal he is and for how well he can tough out situations where it’s needed. My love and hate for him is at a pretty equal ratio but I tried so very, VERY fucking hard to make sure he lived in the past two seasons. Because I’ve grown very attached to Kenny in the past four years I’ve played and loved this series. He’s an ass, yeah, but he’s MY ass. And you know what TellTale did?
They shat all over that. They shat ALL over his character, Clementine’s relationship with him, the amount of TIME he had been within the past two games, as well as the players’ attachment to him (those that actually did and actually got him to survive into the third game), by showing his death in a FLASHBACK that didn’t even last about five to ten minutes.
I get sudden deaths in TWD, I do. Deaths that just KINDA HAPPEN. But usually it’s done a little more ceremoniously. I understand, as well, that Kenny could’ve gotten a MUCH better death scene back in season 2 and SHIT it was a damn good death scene.
BUT THROWING HIM OUT A WINDOW AFTER A POINTLESS WRECK?? HAVING HIM BECOME IMMEDIATELY PARALYZED WITH NO CHOICE BUT TO BE EATEN BY WALKERS????
Call me picky or hard to satisfy, but that-- THAT was a lazy and piss poor death if I ever saw one. This isn’t even about me being attached to the character; this is about giving the RESPECT to a character that’s been a favorite to many. There was no way they were necessarily pressed for time either, the first episode was so damn short. It couldn’t’ve hurt to, I dunno... Try a LITTLE harder in giving him a more deserving death?
It’s something that just... Really wrongs me the absolute wrong way. It was so unceremoniously and sloppily handled, I have to wonder if they forgot Clementine even HAD an ending with Kenny in season 2 and were like “OH SHIT YEAH KENNY he doesn’t fit in the story, just kill him in a flashback”. Like???????
*SIGHS*
Anyway, onto the second point that bugs me SO ENTIRELY about TWDNF... Javi. I’m all for new characters, so long as they’re written well. Javi isn’t so bad of a character, he really isn’t. But I feel as though TellTalle made a HUGE mistake making him the character you control and see the world through.
With Clementine being back, it makes it a little... Unbelievable for the way Javi seems to cling to her damn near right away and want to be there for her, protect her, etc. And really, it’s because we, as the audience, have been through EVERYTHING with this character. We sympathize-- no, EMPATHIZE with Clem. She’s someone very dear to us and I know that 99.999999% of us would do ANYTHING to make sure she survives, she doesn’t get hurt, etc etc. And since WE’RE in control of Javi, well...
Example: once Clem tells Javi that she was once a part of the New Frontier, obviously that’s a pretty big WTF CLEM WHY. But the moment Conrad tells them that they’ll use Clementine as a bargain for Kate and Eleanor, this is where Javi’s attachment to Clem and OURS gets in the way.
If you’ve played the past two games, OF COURSE you wouldn’t DARE to do that to Clementine. Hell. No. Absolutely not. Because we KNOW her. Javi?? What’s he got... A day or two under his belt in time spent with her?? That’s a PRETTY big difference, if you ask me. And that makes our decision hardly align with the reality of the narrative.
Javi does seem like a pretty sympathetic dude but c’mon-- a woman he’s known for YEARS over a little girl he’s known two days max?? A girl he now knows once (or maybe still DOES, for all he knows) associated with the group that KILLED his niece and maybe eventually Kate???
It rubs me wrong. It already rubbed me wrong that we weren’t playing at Clem from the get-go. And this is EXACTLY why. I knew something like this would happen. And it just doesn’t make a lick of damn sense when you get down to it.
Either that, or Javi has some seriously weird priorities.
Just got done with TWD new frontier episode 1 anD BRUH TELL TALE CAN YOU NOT FUCKIN HELL
