Chapter Nine
It turned out that they did have a warhead, and there was a note that it had been armed, so Kurai had no choice but to slowly trudge through the files. Luckily, she was smart enough to know all the places a file like that wouldn't be, and started her search there. She'd gone through every detail in the weapons archive, and then her personnel file, where she edited out her pregnancies in the medical notes, as well as any mention of Rayne or Zane in the family portion out of her biography page, just in case someone thought to double check their wacky leader's intel.
She then began to dig through the files about Meridian and her family. She knew it wouldn't be directly linked to any files about the enemy forces. That would be foolish, but it made enough sense that the General didn't question her choices. He watched her closely from his perch at the other desk in between his plotting for taking over the world. His goons hovered over her shoulders, lazily paying attention to her. She doubted they knew very much about computers, since they didn't call out her editing.
~~~
It took a little over three days for them to read everything in the filing cabinet and on the computer. Very little of it was helpful. As they were preparing to print out the files that Garth had flagged, he noticed another file lurking on the desktop, disguised as a printer icon.
Garth clicked it, and it prompted him for a password. He looked through the notebook, but found no mention of this file.
He clicked the little question mark for the password hint. "Best day ever?" he asked out loud. "It's asking for a month and day."
Rayne offered her birthday. When that didn't work, Zane offered his. They tried Kurai's birthday, and the day Meridian fell, as well as the day she joined the Alliance, and the day she left. They tried the day of Garth, Zatch and Kurai's first mission together, and the same for Seth and Rosen's. When none of those worked, they tried Seth's birthday, then Rosen's, then their anniversary, then even Zatch's and Garth's birthdays.
None worked.
"That is one obscure best day ever," Seth noted, crossing his arms.
"Try August fifth," Zatch offered quietly.
Garth typed it in, and blinked when a huge wall of text appeared on the screen. A few secondary windows popped up shortly after. "Well, that worked."
"What day was that?" Zane asked.
"It would've been our freaking anniversary," Zatch admitted in a mumble.
"That would explain why it was passwording this. You were literally the only other person who knew it," Garth mused distractedly.
"What is it that it needed such a strong password?" Rosen asked.
"It's a collaboration of psychologic reports on the General and captured emails he'd sent to others in the Alliance detailing his plans to murder the Koharu family. He was responsible for all the others dying immediately after they were sent to the field. If there's even a mention in one of these emails about his plans to get his hands on the weapon..."
"The High Council would have to support her rescue!" Seth chirped.
"Why don't you print it? We can read faster if we all take a section," Rosen suggested.
Garth clicked a few times and the printer began to spew out pages. Seth caught them and stacked them in order.
"I'll get more coffee," Rosen said, taking the kids to the kitchen to whip up a quick lunch for them while he was at it.
He got three very distracted mumbles in return.
"Is that file really gonna help rescue mom?" Zane asked hopefully.
"Most likely. If there's enough proof that the General is insane, the council might order her rescue, even without evidence of his plan," Rosen said, neatly stacking ham on sandwiches.
"Why wasn't his admission at the school enough to prove that?" Rayne asked.
"With his claim that the school was a brainwashing setup, and that all the teachers were in on it, any testimony from the witnesses became viewed as false. And all the students are too young to testify."
"That's stupid," Zane grumbled.
"Exceedingly," Rosen agreed, sliding a sandwich across the counter to each of them.
By the time that they returned with the coffee, the office was littered with stacks of pages covered in highlights.
"Is that a good sign?" Zane asked.
"Very," Seth said, looking up for a second.
"There's a freaking ton of shit in here that says the General bastard is bat-shit insane," Zatch agreed, scribbling a highlighter over one such report.
"And the emails to General Mastiff include the start of his plans," Garth added.
"Mastiff died a few years back, right?" Rosen asked.
Garth nodded. "It's why our General was transferred to Mastiff's sector, and then caught murdering the Koharus within the Alliance, and subsequently jailed."
"The files seem to end after he was sent to prison though," Seth noted.
"Doesn't make much sense to keep collecting data on a man awaiting the death penalty in a maximum security prison," Rosen pointed out.
Garth scooped up the papers around him. "Let's get this to the High Council."
~~~~~
Kurai found the file she'd been trying to avoid by accident. It was hidden as a picture file in an email from High Council Member Silver to HCM Rogers. The email was about Silver's children, and claimed the file was a picture of the baby playing with a cat. She clicked it and a block of text popped onto the screen.
"The weapon emits a powerful energy, and though it is dangerous to touch, one of our techs has invented a way to harness its ambient energy. We've decided it best to use it to power our computer systems to prevent power outages. It will be stored in Lab 3" the email read.
Kurai gasped softly. That was the lab she was sitting in. And the generator was less than ten feet behind her, hidden by a simple panel. It had never malfunctioned, so she had never had a need to open it.
"What did you find?" one of the guards asked, slowly shuffling over.
"Just reading one of Silver's emails. I never knew she had such a potty mouth," Kurai lied, amazed at how smooth her voice sounded. She kept the text on the screen to avoid raising his suspicions. The goon stopped his advance, snorting.
"Everyone has a darkside," the General said from his desk, kicking up his feet. "Even you, my dear."
"Not me," Kurai said, clicking out of the page and deleting it smoothly. "I don't hide who I am."
"Don't you? Not a single one of the Koharus has been truly good. Do you think you are?"
"I think that I am human, and inherently flawed. But I try my best to take care of the ones I love. That makes me a good person, I think."
"Even as you sit here helping me find a weapon that can destroy the world?"
Kurai shrugged. "Best of a bad situation and all that." She looked over at him. "Your surname or codename aren't mentioned a single time in any of these files. What is it, if you don't mind me asking?"
The grin the General gave her was blinding. "Koharu."

The High Council quickly agreed to Kurai's rescue after Garth and Rosen presented the evidence to them. Seth waited outside with Zatch. The kids had been left with Rosen's sister, Thorn, just in case they were sent out immediately.
Zatch fidgeted nervously. His shoulder hurt, his head hurt, and his heart hurt. He hoped Kurai was doing alright. She was strong, he knew that, but torture and captivity were not for the faint of heart.
"She'll be alright, you know," Seth said gently.
"What do you freaking know? It's not like you've ever been held captive or tortured," Zatch snapped.
"Actually, I do. I was taken captive by Meridian as a child and experimented on. I have powers very similar to yours, according to Kurai."
Zatch gave him a hard look. "Is that why you freaking look like me?"
"I think that has more to do with the fact that we're related, at least according to our files."
Zatch let out a string of exceptionally colorful curses. Seth waited patiently for him to be finished.
"So we're like, freaking... Cousins or some shit?"
"Half-brothers, actually."
Zatch made a strangled noise, then blurted, "Hell no!"
Seth shrugged and moved to lean on the wall.

The group was ordered to go home and rest. Now that there was substantial proof, the High Council took the teachers' testimonies seriously and felt that Kurai could wait a few hours for her rescue. They needed all forces at full strength. The HQ building had been designed to withstand an invasion, and even though they all knew the layout and weaknesses, it was best to be prepared.
Seth and Rosen retired to their regular guest room, and Garth took the other. Zatch had pulled all the curtains in the living room and made a nice bed on the couch, but he couldn't get comfortable. His shoulder hurt no matter how he tried to lay. Maybe another pillow would help.
He stalked to Kurai's room. She had a freaking ton of extra pillows and wouldn't notice if one wasn't on the bed when she got back. He grabbed one and pulled it free, knocking another pillow over in the process. When he turned back to fix it, he noticed that it was Mr. Nimnom he had tipped over.
The little tiger looked so upset lying there that Zatch couldn't help but pick him up and tuck the stuffed animal under his chin.
He remembered a time the three of them had hunkered down in Kurai's apartment after a mission.
He'd had a nightmare, and Kurai had come to comfort him, dragging Mr. Nimnom with her.
"Give him a hug. You'll feel better," she'd said, beaming at him.
"Yeah, right. It's just a dumb freaking tiger," he'd grumbled.
Kurai had pouted and shoved Mr. Nimnom at him, dragging his arms up to hold it to his chest.
"I have nightmares a lot," Kurai had admitted quietly, looking down at her hands. "Holding Mr. Nimnom makes them less scary."
Zatch had to admit that petting the soft fabric of the tiger's coat was kind of soothing.
"Won't you need him then?" he asked, genuinely concerned for her.
She shook her head. "You need him more right now. Keep him company for me, won't you?"
Zatch flopped onto Kurai's bed with Mr. Nimnom still in his hold. "Stupid freaking tiger," he grumbled. Somehow, his fabric was still as soft as it was back then. A pillow had caught under Zatch's shoulder, supporting it properly so the pain faded into a dull ache.
Between the tiger, the pillow, and Kurai's sweet perfume floating all around him, Zatch was asleep before her realized it.

"So... You don't need me alive at all, do you?" Kurai realized with a start.
"Oh, you'll be kept alive, unless you prove to be too much trouble. All of my other children went and defected on me, and got themselves killed for it. You were always so obedient. Won't you help me, dear?"
"Your other children? Your my...?"
"Your father, yes."
