chapter 4: his "fault to blame"
it’s now the next day, you were in bed since you weren’t able to go to school till tomorrow, due to your injuries. or at least until the non-stop pain went away, and you got your crutches. meanwhile, bakugou was bored and restless in class, constantly looking over at your empty seat with a slight frown on his face. He couldn’t focus, even mr. aizawa called him out for it. when lunch break came, he immediately got up and left the classroom to go check up on you. he walked up to your door, and after a moment of hesitation, knocked on it.
“it’s open!” you yell loud enough for him to hear you. bakugou entered your room, his eyes darting around to see if you were okay.
“hey, how are you feeling, idiot?” he asked in a surly tone, as he closed the door behind him.
“i’m good, it's a little boring being here by myself though,” you sighed, watching him as he sat on the edge of your bed.
“sucks to be you, huh?” he teased, his tone light and playful.
“is it boring without me there?” you teased back, matching the same tone as him. he rolled his eyes as he noticed you were being playful back.
“tch, as if. it’s more peaceful without you there causing trouble and getting on my damn nerves all the time.” he scoffed in a snarky tone, trying way too hard to seem uninterested.
“yeah whatever,” you smiled, laughing at his tease.
his smirk widened into a slight smile as you laughed at his joke, the sound of your laughter making his heartbeat a little faster. he tried to look unaffected, but your smile was too damn cute to not notice. he leaned back against the wall, trying to keep his casual, confident demeanor. “this is way too damn distracting.” he thought to himself.
“you think you can send me the notes in class today? i don’t wanna be too behind” you asked, pushing yourself out of bed.
“yeah, yeah i will. you don’t even have to ask,” he said, willingly. he watched your attempt to get out of bed, making him annoyed. “stop trying to get up, you’ll just hurt yourself more,” he huffed in annoyance.
“i was just getting out of bed,” you explained yourself, plopping down on your vanity chair.
“you can barely get out of bed,” he complained, rolling his eyes again before falling silent for a moment. he glanced at you, taking in your bandaged leg and your current state on the chair. he let out a sigh before speaking again, his voice slightly gentler than usual.
“you’re not supposed to be walking around yet, you're making things worse,” he repeated.
“well, do you want the honor of carrying me around everywhere?” you turned to face him.
his face turned a barely noticeable shade of pink at your comment, caught off-guard by your unexpected tone. he quickly tried to cover it up by standing up. “tch, it’s not like i have anything better to do, but don’t get too comfortable, i’m not your damn personal taxi.”
“okay then,” you smiled, you were going to say something else but the bell had rang, making him forced to go back to class. “you coming back after school?” you questioned, making him stop by the door.
his expression softened a bit as you smiled, but he quickly schooled it back to his grumpy persona. “yeah, i’m coming back,” he said, not making eye contact as he spoke.
he then opened the door, closing it behind himself and heading back to class. you were now back to being by yourself. for some reason, you had the motivation to get yourself all dolled up. you put something cute on, but taking small breaks every so often since your leg was in excruciating pain. you did your hair, and added some jewelry while looking at yourself in the vanity mirror. by the time you finished, bakugou had came back opening the door, looking at you while you were in the middle of a tiktok.
“where you goin’?” he asked in a neutral tone, trying to hide the fact that he actually found you cute as hell at that moment. he closed the door behind him as he stepped into the room, his gaze still on you.
“oh i just got ready just because i’m bored. ya’like it?” you asked, turning your body towards him, watching his eyes go down your whole body.
his eyes scanned over your outfit for a moment. “it’s decent,” he complimented regularly, trying to play it cool. you wore a butter yellow matching two-piece quarter zip and sweatpants. “well, since you're already dressed, i was gonna ask if you wanted to go to the coffee shop. and i also was told to tell you that recovery girl has your crutches.”
“yeah, i would love to go!!” you exclaimed, smiling in excitement.
his expression softened as he saw your excited smile, a small smirk appearing on his face at your reaction. “alright, i'm gonna go change, then we can go get your crutches then head to the coffee shop,” he explained, stuffing his hands into his pants as he walked out.
you went back to making your tiktok. after a few minutes, bakugou walked back into your room wearing a black shirt and black sweatpants, his usual confident color. he looked at you while you were on your phone, walking up to you.
“ok, let’s go nerd.” he got close to you as you stood up and got on his back. “you’re gonna need a coat, it’s pretty cold outside,” you reminded him, looking at his facial expression as your hands wrapped around his neck.
“it’s only 69 degrees, it’s not cold.” he dismissed your worry as he carried you down the hall.
you guys went down the elevator and saw the class again, everyone questioning where you two were going this time. you quickly explained to them your guy's plan and headed off to recovery girl. once you got there, she handed you your crutches and told you that you’d be on them for about a week or two.
after that, you and bakugou walked to the coffee shop. he walked beside you, he had his hands stuffed into his pockets, but was paying attention to make sure you didn’t fall. once you both arrived at the coffee shop, he opened the door for you, the café was half empty since people didn’t come here often. there were only a few people scattered around the shop. bakugou ordered the food while you sat down, he came back with some danishes, apple juice, and coffee. you two were now sitting down and chatting.
“so, what did you guys do in class today?” you asked, taking a sip of your apple juice.
he took a sip of his coffee before answering your question, “tch, just our normal lessons, mostly hero stuff. we also did a little bit of training but, it wasn’t anything extraordinary.” he leaned back in his chair, looking out the window at people passing by outside.
“did you guys take notes?” you asked, looking over at the window, then back to him.
“of course i did, idiot,” he joked in a playful tone, “you're not getting them though.”
“why?! that’s not fair. i wasn't even at school,” you whined, taking a bite of your danish.
“calm down, i’m only joking with you, crybaby,” he added, also taking a bite into his danish.
“yeah, whatever,” you shifted in your seat, facing your body towards the window to give him the fake silent treatment. while looking outside the window, you noticed a purple fog coming towards the café, similar to the one during the exam.
his smirk widened seeing your fake silent treatment, finding it amusing. “don’t get pissed over a little joke,” he chuckled, following your gaze towards the window, noticing the same thing as you.
“you see that?” you pointed over to the fog, a figure now appearing inside of it.
his smirk vanished as he followed where your finger was pointing at, his eyes locked onto the strange gaseous cloud and the figure inside of it.
“what the hell is that?” he gasped in a low, cautious tone, keeping an eye on the fog as it moved closer.
as the fog grew thicker and more opaque, a sword came soaring out the gas, darting to the window you and bakugou were sitting at. his body stiffened as the sword was close to hitting you. you rose up using your crutches as the villain took out their sword and kicked the shattered glass onto your guys' table. you realized it was the same guy from last time.
“bakugou, that’s the same guy from last time,” you whispered hesitantly.
his eyes widened in recognition as the villain stepped into the café, and you mentioned it was the same guy. he stood in front of you in a defensive position ready to fight. “the hell is he doing here again? damn pro heroes can’t do shit right.” he barked in a low tone, his mind already coming up with a plan to protect you.
the villain scanned the room, remembering your face instantly. seeing you in your vulnerable, defenseless state only made him laugh. “thought it was over, huh?” he asked, extending one his swords under bakugou to knock you off of your crutches, making you fall on the floor.
“bastard!” bakugou yelled, his palms popping small sparks as he prepared to fight. he fast-charged at the villain, using his quirk to flame the villain outside the coffee shop so nobody else would get hurt.
the villain rolled around before catching himself, he extended multiple swords, making bakugou jump and dodge each one of them while also blasting the swords into pieces. the villain was obviously going to lose this battle with bakugou. even the tiniest blast was still effective on the villain.
“that’s enough! i'm not here for you,” the villain exhaled, creating more swords for bakugou to dodge as one of his swords extended all the way into the coffee shop, trying to capture you. you were still on the ground, but seeing the blade burst through the café frightened you. you levitated anything off of the ground trying to distract the blade while you made countless failed attempts to run away, only for the sword to slice each object thrown at him. the sword finally reached you, stabbing you in the same injured leg as last time. you screamed in horror and agony, a tear strolling down your face.
“HEY!” bakugou yelled as he watched the villain stab your injured leg, anger coursed through his veins. he charged forward using his explosions to propel himself toward and launch a powerful attack on the villain. “I SAID LEAVE HER ALONE!” with the villain distracted, bakugou used his ultimate power move onto destroying his swords. “HOWITZER IMPACT!”
that sent the swords flying everywhere, he obliterated every single one, even the villain himself. with the villain unconscious, bakugou dashed over to you. you were on the floor with a bloody bandage, and dried tears on your cheek. his heart ached seeing you like this.
“dammit,” he cursed under his breath as he knelt down next to you, his eyes focusing on your wound. he carefully picked you up as an ambulance truck and some police cars pulled up to the café, thank goodness. “you’re gonna be okay,” he comforted you in a rough tone, trying to reassure both you and himself as he took in the situation.
the ambulance rushed in the coffee shop, a man took you out of bakugou’s arms and placing you on the hospital bed. bakugou walked out right next to you. he watched the police arrest the villain, knowing he totally fucked up. his eyes darted back to you after seeing you started to hyperventilate from the excessive blood loss.
the ambulance workers took you into the ambulance truck, letting bakugou ride with you guys on the way to the hospital. while you passed out, bakugou was right there with you, holding onto your cold and fragile hand the entire drive. once you made it to the hospital, you soared up, sweat glands appearing on your forehead. you looked around, and saw bakugou slumped in the waiting chair next to your bed. he was holding onto your hands, his head lent back, and eyes half-lidded from exhaustion.
“bakugou,” you looked over at him.
his eyes opened slowly at the sound of your voice, his body tensing as he looked up to see that you were awake. “good you’re awake..” he sighed, in a tired voice.
“mhm, are you okay?” you asked, seeing you look all wearied.
his expression softened at your concern for him. "i should be asking you that, you got hurt again,” he pointed out, his hands still holding onto yours, refusing to let go.
“i’m okay bakugou, you saved me,” you smiled, holding onto his hands tighter.
his heart clenched at your words, him still vividly remembering the panic he felt when he saw you hurt. “i should’ve been stopped that bastard before he got to you,” he mumbled, his voice filled with a mixture of anger and guilt.
“i'm still alive, isn’t that all that matters? my condition could’ve been much worse, and at least he didn't ruin my other leg.” you added, trying to lighten the moment.
bakugou’s gaze met yours, his eyes filled with relief but still some guilt. “i know, but i failed at protecting you. how can i become a pro hero if i can’t even save you?” he shuddered in a hasty pitch, his hand tightening around yours as he stood up out of his seat.
“i don’t know what i could possibly say to convince you that you saved me, but to me, you're like my hero.” you said, pulling him into a hug.
he was hesitant at first, but he then relaxed into the hug. his arms wrapped around your back as your head was into his chest. “idiot.. you always find a way to turn things around.” he mumbled into your neck.
you both then pulled away from the hug. the air felt thick between the two of you, both holding eye contact, waiting to see what either would do. both of your hearts were pounding in sync, time seemed to slow down as a mix of emotions passed between you, neither of you were sure what to do. his eyes flickered down to your lips for a brief moment, his mind filled with the thought of how soft they would feel, it made you stare at his lips too. so pink and plump.
“you starrin’ so hard, might as well kiss ‘em,” bakugou flirted, smirking down at you.
you both leaned into each other, your lips pressing against each other. his hand shot up to your cheek, cupping it as you guys were deepening the kiss, allowing you both to get lost in the moment. his lips moved with tenderness and intensity, yours moving with passion and desire. you pulled back from the kiss, having to stop yourself from smiling way too much.
“you can’t even kiss properly without smiling like an idiot,” he teased, his hand rubbing the back of his neck.
you laughed at his joke. a few moments later, the doctor came into your room explaining your injuries and that you wouldn't recover for another 2 weeks, and you’d be taking stronger medication. all might sent you guys a ride back to the campus. everyone was already in their dorms asleep, while you and bakugou went onto the third floor together.
“goodnight bakugou, thanks again for saving me,” you said, twisting the knob and pushing the door open with your crutches.
bakugou stood at your door frame leaning against the wall, his mind was still a mess from the emotions of today. “goodnight, idiot,” he huffed, sticking his hands in his pockets. “and don’t mention it. just…take care of yourself while you're healing alright?”
you got a little closer to him, planting a small kiss on his lips. “i will,” you smiled as you entered your room and used one of your crutches to close the door carefully.
his heart fluttered at the soft press of your lips against his, all the words on his tongue suddenly vanishing. he stood outside your door for a moment longer, his fingers gently touching his lips as if he could still feel the ghost of your kiss.
“damnit…” he muttered under his breath as he pushed off the wall and headed back to his dorm. he reached his room and entered, closing the door behind him with more force than necessary. his mind flooded with thoughts of you. he changed into his pajamas as the events of the day replayed in his mind; the way you were injured and in pain, how it felt to hold you close, the way your lips felt against his..
he sat down on the bed, letting out a frustrated sigh as he ran his hand through his hair, his mind still swirling. he heard some noises coming from your room, probably you struggling to get into your pajamas, but then finally lying in bed. his thoughts were then interrupted by a text message. he checked his phone realizing it was from you.
y/n
you: you know I can hear you right?
you: stop worrying about me
you: i'm okay i promise
he felt a pang of guilt as he read your message. he knew he shouldn’t worry so much, but he couldn’t help it. he sighed and typed out a reply.
bakugou
bakugou: easier said than done, dumb ass.
you: would it be easier if you slept next to me?
you: you know just to make sure i'm okay
his heart skipped a beat as he read your message. the thought of sleeping next to you, being able to be close to you and make sure you were okay, was both tempting and nerve-racking at the same time. he didn’t reply to your message, he had been conflicted after reading your message, but eventually, his protective instincts won out. he quietly walked over to your room and let himself in, closing the door behind him. he saw you lying in bed, and without a word, he walked over and climbed into the bed next to you, his body instinctively seeking your warmth and closeness.
he laid in bed next to you, still awake as you slept hastily and silently. his mind still rushed with conviction, replaying the same events in his head. he looked over at you, taking in your peaceful features, and a small smile tugged at the corner of his lips. he couldn't deny it anymore. he was completely smitten with you, and as he laid there, holding you close, he thought to himself,
“i really saved her.”
