5 minutes with Adam Martin, Director of EXHiBiT Manchester
I didn’t manage to make it down to their launch night with Anthea and Alex Celler playing b2b in Sound Control. But after listening to the podcast by Anthea uploaded to their soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/exhibit_mcr/anthea-airpod-17. I wish I had. From all my sources of information I was informed that the launch went off with a bang and was intent on going to their second event showcasing DJ W!LD, David Glass and the Manchester based Applique music label in the mix. In the days leading up to it I managed to organize a quick interview with Adam Martin, one of the directors of EXHiBiT Manchester. As it was a quick interview I decided to do a profile, find out a bit more about this new underground house and tech night and delve into the concept behind it.
So tell us a bit about yourself and the event?
I’m from Manchester and a producer and DJ under the moniker Twenty12. I thought I’d start my own night up as I wanted to bring something new to Manchester showcasing DJs that are coming up through the woodworks as well as big headliners. For example David Glass he’s been producing for a long time but people are only starting to realize him now that Loco Dice and Luciano are playing his tracks.
For those that don’t know Luciano started Cadenza Records, home of the ‘’Vagabundos’’, back in 2003 releasing minimal techno and house with an organic and improvised feel. Loco Dice has released a string of productions on M_nus, Cadenza, Ovum and Cocoon and runs Desolat with Martin Buttrich. Both are world renowned DJs and should be put on everyone’s bucket list.
In terms of big names DJ W!LD is on the roster of Cocoon, been a resident at Circo Loco and played at the Winter Music Conference in Miami and Sonar Festival in Barcelona this year. He’s one of France’s underground house heroes and easily one of the most deserving breakthrough acts in my books.
How did you get into producing and DJ’n?
It all started about 3-4 years ago. I used to go to Sankeys a lot and that’s how I got into my electronic music. I went to see Cocoon in Ibiza one summer and have been DJ’n techno, tech-house and deep house ever since. I’ve produced tracks that have been released on Applique Music and Crossworld Records. Also have some new productions that are ready to be released and signed. It’s all going well.
Top 3 records labels?
8bit one of Nick Curly’s record labels, Desolat as they are always bringing out amazing tracks and Cécille Records.
Top tracks at the moment?
Christian Burkhardt – Com’on
The Fair Ratio – Mas
What track would you play to get everyone bouncin’?
Basement Jaxx – Fly Life
Why call it EXHiBiT Manchester?
The reason behind that is because we’re exhibiting the artists. It’s not just a line up. We’re showcasing the DJs as artists. It’s all about them. It’s not really about much else. Obviously we want to throw a good party and get people moving but that’s the main thing.
Do you have any inspirations behind the concept or do you feel that there was a niche you wanted to fill in Manchester?
It was more the niche thing and for me personally it was to understand the industry a bit more as that is the way I’d like to go in the future.
When will your first event be in 2013?
End of February or at the start of March. We’ve got a list of artists we want. If we exhibit them they certainly will not disappoint.
My personal highlight from their second exhibit had to be DJ W!LD. It was truly music to get lost to. Until next time folks! ;p
