thinking about how twilestia fanfic writers will often employ the "we've grown out of the student and mentor dynamic so now its morally fine" angle and I do respect and enjoy that approach, but I think there's something so special about the idea that maybe we never fully grow out of that dynamic, maybe twilight just doesn't forget how celestia practically raised her, but they just look at that and go "well, we can make something new. we don't have to forget the past to make room for the future." and it's different because it can't not be. twilight is still comforted by celestia's motherly aura and celestia still enjoys caring for one of her little ponies, it's just something else now too.

it's so incredibly telling that the whole song is about these ponies' dreams, their aspirations, things that maybe aren't exactly likely but damnit, the gala is spectacular, and miracles happen at miraculous places..

..and twilight sparkle, protege of the sun, who's frankly spent the season making friendships and forging (what will prove to be) lifelong bonds with people as well as being said protege practically her entire life, has her own little verse where she sings about having celestia's attention the whole night.
