The Obsidian Gospel Track-by-Track 4/8
“Spriggan Virtues”
The centrepiece of the record, this track is easily one of the most hard rock-style songs I’ve ever written as Mistwalker. In a way it’s a little out of place but considering how big of an influence Kvelertak has been on me I really wanted to write something in their vein.
The lyrics of this track are inspired not just by the spriggans from the world of The Elder Scrolls but also by the real-world mythological creatures from Cornish folklore. The idea is some good ol’ fashioned eco-terrorism conducted by ancient forest spirits against modern industrialization and land development.
The lyrics for this one were entirely penned and sung by our live guitarist Iris. I knew that they’d be the perfect fit for this song given the style of their previous band Twin Banshee, and since I had one member of that band onboard I figured I’d recruit another by getting Tommy to lay down a guest solo on this track, which he nailed.
The final note of the title track is the same as the first note of this song as both tracks are meant to flow together, something I’ve never tried before with an album.
