Im learning how to code on Twine as i want to make my own story BUT ITS SO DIFFICULT 😭😭😭 may you tell me how you learnt and explanation of the codes IF IT WONT TAKE LONG OFC sjudurhf

Really not sure why everyone's flocking to me for coding advice (I am not that smart people) but I can kind of try? 😭

Honestly, it will depend on which you choose but I work with SugarCube and it wasn't that hard for me to grasp it and it really isn't unless you're dealing with Javascript.

One of the first things I did was get a template because I hated the way default SugarCube thing looked so I would suggest get one of those if you care about looks and can't code it to be pretty.

One of the main things that helped me was the SugarCube Documentation it quite literally has everything ever and you can check how to use certain things if you're ever confused.

I also used @idrellegames' Coding in Twine Masterpost as my guide while I was figuring things out and honestly I still go and check it once in a while lol. I think this was my biggest help since I didn't really have anyone to ask things to + I'm insanely shy when asking for help.

Other than that, I just googled whatever difficulty I was facing and figured things out lol. 😭 I'm sorry if this isn't helpful but I don't think I can explain all of my code (it is a mess too lol) but you got this #trust. Good luck!

hey! if anybody can share resources on how to get sugarcube games on twine to remember certain achievements have been triggered i would greatly appreciate it :) and especially if there is a way to get around it without creating individual variables for each achievement. thanks!

would anyone happen to know WHY im unable to add a menu to my UI. i'll type in the code and add the StoryMenu passage but it just never...shows up.

Goctionni's SugarCube Validator is an extremely useful tool. It checks that your <<if>> <<elseif>> and <</if>> statements are structured correctly and catches errors in your code.

It can be used in your browser. Simply drag and drop your game's published html file into the validator and it will perform the checks and output any errors and the passages where they occur.

Definitely recommend using it before you share your game publicly! It won't catch everything wrong with your code, but it helps as a quick check for major issues.

hi! I'm really sorry to bother you, but I was wondering if you could maybe answer few of my questions (it's not game-focused, more of a twine related questions)

is the music in 'For the Ashes' yours? and I wanted to ask if you could explain how does it work, adding music/sounds into twine?

The music is not mine, it's licensed from other places that you'll have to pay a subscription for. https://filmmusic.io/ and some YouTube channels do have copyright free music that you can use for free as long as you add attribution if you don't wish to pay.

As for adding music in. There's a few ways to do it. SugarCube has a write up for it but I'll also explain.

After having your mp3/wav file in the folder you'll call it in the beginning (I put it after my StoryInIt files) as such:

<<cacheaudio "opening" "audio/audiotitle.mp3">>

The "opening" is simply what you would call the audio in game. So if you're using it for ambience you can call it "ambience1" or if you're using sfx for cars then "sfxcar." The next part just details where to find it. For me it'll always be in my audio folder and the rest is obvious.

When calling it up put it at the beginning of the passage as such:

<<audio "opening" play>>

There's tons of things you can add. The above just causes the audio to play.

Whereas this: <<audio "opening" loop play>> Will cause the song to loop after it's finished.

And this: <<audio "opening" volume 0.4 play>> Will have the music play at 40% volume.

Again, SugarCube has all the possible arguments so definitely use that if you're looking for something specific.

Hi, I myself was planning to post my wip on cog because choicescript was much easier for me to understand than twine but after reading about all the horrid stuff that's apparently been going on there I'm rethinking my decision and going back to twine. Do you know any tutorials for twine coding that are easy to understand?

Tweego and Visual Code Studio let you code in files instead of boxes! Just remember that instead of making a "box", you use two colons (::) to start passages!

I think this is the setup I used to avoid a glitch where if you go to a menu option, then another one from there, the return link doesn't take you back to the game, but the menu you were in just before. This should keep that from happening.

Though, if you figured that out already, nevermind! 😆
