We just reached 3000 followers! As always, we genuinely appreciate all of the likes, reblogs, comments, questions, and notes you all have given us. Some of our followers have been with us since we were master’s students. This blog is something we both do for wellness, it also has become a hub which displays our experiences, thoughts, and growth over the past couple years. This is our last semester as doctoral students, as we move into our professional careers we hope to keep sharing our experiences with each other and you all.

Grad School Interviews

Hey Y'all,

Someone asked us how they could prepare for counseling graduate school interviews. We thought our answer might help some of y'all who are preparing for interviews next semester. Here is what we said:

In our opinion, some things that would have helped us prepare for grad interviews is understanding that if invited to go for a face-to-face interview, students have already passed the first round of the acceptance process. This also means that the school already wants them!

In our opinion, during face-to-face interviews, faculty just want to make sure the image they got of you from your interest letter and letters of recommendations match up to how you present yourself when face to face.

Another helpful tip we wish we would have known is that the interview process starts from the moment you arrive on campus. There is ALWAYS someone watching and evaluating you. Half of the battle, in our opinion, is being comfortable in your own skin while talking to others and being evaluated.

Again, in our opinion, many grad programs look for many different things in their students. We like to think that if someone wants to get a master’s in counseling, they can...they just have to find the right program, at the right time, whose looking for characteristics you have.

Also, people always say, “just be yourself” like that shit is easy haha. Its hard because you have to be a bit vulnerable to be yourself with people. It’s especially difficult to be vulnerable with people who are evaluating you. When going on interviews and interviewing students we want to see individuals who are strong enough to be vulnerable and show us who they are despite the circumstances.

Another tip we wish we would have known is to have a real, genuine, and personal answer to the question why do you want to get this degree. Most people say “because I want to help people”. We always role our eyes internally when hearing this damn answer haha. We are thinking “Everyone wants to help everyone, what makes you any different than the other young white girl whose into Brene Brown and is here because of personal experiences in therapy”. What we are really asking you is “what are you going to do with the power and privilege of being a therapist in your community”. The answer lets faculty know that you’ve done some research and you're not just in grad school because you didn't know what to do with your life haha
