I think I’ve finally hit that point in the PhD where I understand just how easy it is for your mental health to tank and how sneakily burnout and anxiety creep upon you while you keep telling yourself “you just have to grind this one out.” Of course, it’s relative and perhaps I’m also extremely exhausted from being across an ocean from my partner and family, I miss my friends from home, and the holidays are coming up.

So I did something kinda scary, and I told my supervisor exactly how I was feeling- I even cried lol. And even though I was not looking for a solution other than her to listen to me, she immediately delivered. I feel so supported and like genuinely cared for and I’m so thankful i am working where I am. Moral of the story, tell someone if you’re struggling. I had told my coworker buddy before this and they encouraged me to speak up to my supervisor and they were so right to encourage me.

With a plan to take some time off and some extra help on my project so I don’t fall behind, I already feel better day by day. Mental health matters! ❤️‍🩹

To anyone who has been rejected: don’t give up. The first time I applied for PhD programs, I got rejected from every single one. The only acceptance I received was to an international Master’s program. So I packed my bags and went to live in Ireland for a year. Here, I’ve made some of the best friends of my life. I’m making plans to stay another year and living with a friend. 

The second time I applied, I also got rejected. But, I discovered that my interests and career goals had changed. Both of my degrees are in English Literature, but I’ve awoken an interest in combining literary studies and film/television studies and I’ve learned I love looking at the intersection between popular culture and politics. 

It took my cousin five times, five years of applying, before she was accepted into veterinary school. Next year will be my third year of applying to PhD programs. If you ever feel alone or defeated, you are not. I promise you others are right there alongside you going through the same motions and the same pains. But we will get there, nonetheless. And sometimes, we will be stronger for it.

the prof i will TA for this semester asked to see me at the end of the week so i said yes, but that i would like to see even before that to have the info as soon as possible and......... they just basically just said "ok see you on friday then" like ???? can you not answer my request ??? i am not mad that they didn't say yes but to not even acknowledge my request feels a bit rude tbh !!!

I've officially had my comps lists approved, so this summer the summer of reading! On the right are the books I've already read. On the left are the books I'm hoping to read in the month of June (between teaching and taking two classes lol).
