Hi! I tried to ask you this same question on deviantart so I hope you don't mind me asking again here. Anyway, I just wanted some advice on how to get better at digital art. I tried several tutorials including yours but everything I do just seems wrong or it never comes out like the examples. I would also like to know if it takes you long to create things on Photoshop? I really admire your work and creativity by the way!
I guess looking for many tutorials online and experimenting with techniques is some of the best ways to advance in art. Like others i’ve told, don’t be disheartened when something doesn’t turn out the way you thought it would, even when you follow a tutorial. Like baking, even if you follow the directions to a tee it may not turn out the way it looks like in the recipe, but it doesn’t make it any less delicious XD the more you do something, the better you’ll get at it, and the easier it is to get into rhythm. I still struggle getting things the way I want them to, but i’m constantly researching and looking for different approaches to a single problem.
I commend you spending time trying new techniques, but keep in mind you gotta start focusing on those that you’re most comfortable doing and which suits your style. Start allotting more attention to one, and refine that technique. Art isn’t a science (or math lol whatever makes more sense), it’s organic, requires time to grow, and is essentially a melting pot of experience and advice given by other artists. there’ll never be a single “correct” path to a solution—if one method doesn’t cut it, there’ll always be another way to make things work.
Time spent on art depends on what it is i’m doing. If it’s something i struggle with, then it’ll take me more time to finish something because i’m constantly looking up more references, tutorials, etc. On the other hand, if i’m drawing something i’m amazingly inspired to do, I can sit for several hours and draw non-stop. There will be pieces I can finish within a day, others, maybe a month. There are several occasions where everything was technically done, but I ended up spending another couple hours just refining it, tweaking the slightest bits of colour and stuff until I finally decide to put down the stylus and let go. Art is unpredictable, but it doesn’t mean you can’t handle it :)
