Twitter Essay explaining SEO
Misogynists DO Exist (In Case You Were Wondering)
I'm never NOT shocked at how much people want to hate-watch my feminism videos. Like, the retention rates on those videos are ENORMOUS. These people HAVE to sit there and watch the entire four minutes despite obvious, white-hot hatred for me and what I'm saying.
(Of course this doesn't prevent them from commenting before it's done. You can tell by their words they didn't see it all before posting.)
But I just wonder: WHY? If my support of women and minorities fills you with SUCH rage that you have to call me names, WHY watch it?
I've seen many misogynistic, homophobic, racist, hate-filled videos on YouTube that got my blood boiling in less than five seconds. And do you know what I did? I clicked off.
But then again, there have been other videos I have STRONGLY disagreed with that I was able to watch all the way through. The comments I left were respectful and made counter-points. Sometimes the creators even engaged me back.
But I click away when the video is not only so hateful, but so MORONIC, that I know any kind of reply would be useless.
Perhaps we should see endless, hateful streams of comments and high retention as a compliment: these people see the video as dangerous. They CAN'T click away, or not comment. The video cannot be ignored. There is something valid inside it, something they have to tear down.
Of course 99% of the time they choose to do so with attacks on my character or sexuality or manhood or (very commonly) my teeth. It's a curious blend of recognition that they cannot let this video go, and the lack of mental capacity to attack it in any meaningful way.
A lot of people ask why I leave comments up on these video. Why don't I turn them off. The truth is I want to see these comments. More than that, I want OTHER people to see them. Sometimes all you have to do in a debate is let your opponent dig their own grave. No one rational can look at that comments page and say, "Well, but the MAJORITY of people object to feminism for a reasonable cause."
Perhaps some have valid—or at least not horribly evil—reasons to dislike feminism, whatever they think it is. But they're not the majority. The majority cannot tolerate the thought of a white male supporting women's rights, who think I'm only doing it to get "feminist pussy." (That's an incredibly common remark, by the way).
The majority are the ones who call me a retard, a faggot, a dickless white knight, who say my parents should have aborted me. The majority are the ones who say I should go get braces before I dare to open my mouth about feminism. They have actually said this.
I want others to see these comments. I want them to recognize that these people are out there, they do exist, and they are numerous.
(Also, if I turned of comments on my feminism videos, angry little boys would scamper to my other videos and leave hate there).
The bottom line is this: people rarely attack something they see as illegitimate. If it was really so "retarded," why would they even care? Why would they leave 1,000 word diatribes on a YouTube page? Why would they dig up personal information and publish it about me?
It's been said 1,000 ways, but if you are attacked for what you say, it's only because you've said something others have cause to fear.
