Dimensions: The Mathematics of Symmetry and Space

Our current FREE exhibition in Gallery 8 explores what it means to move in one, two, three and more dimensions. Developed in collaboration with the University of Oxford’s Mathematical Institute, it used stunning Islamic ceramics, prehistoric carvings, Renaissance prints and virtual reality to take visitors on a journey into cutting-edge science.

In the exhibition, a wall of beautifully decorated tiles helps us to understand two-dimensional objects as well as different types of symmetries they can have. A two-dimensional space is a plane which requires two coordinates to navigate: x and y, longitude and latitude, height and width. So-called 'flat-art' is that which exists on a 2D support.
