Rebirth
The Saint-Pierre cathedral of Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine, France), located on a site of the 6th century.
The monument has a classic style because the original Gothic building of the 12th century was destroyed in the 18th century due to its deplorable state. The construction work of the new cathedral, that we can see nowadays, will be completed in 1845.
It is in the walls of the destroyed Gothic cathedral that Henri Tudor, future Henry VII; on December 25, 1483, promised to marry Elizabeth of York. This union, effective in 1486, will mark the end of the war of the Two Roses and initiate the Tudor dynasty.
(The photos show, in order: a stained glass window near the organ niche; the organ of 1874; the nave; The Deliverance of Saint Peter, work of the painter Le Forestier of 1828, located in the south arm of the transept; Fresco of the recognition of the city of Rennes at the southern end of the transept, by Alphonse Le Hénaff; a sculpted retable; an aerial view of the nave; the candelabra of the choir; a stained glass depicting Mignen's Arms; and finally, the facade of Saint-Pierre de Rennes.
