NIGHT WAS IN MY CHEST

How hard was it to pull morning through the curtains?

I tack onto the bed, take hard, flat, flop breaths. It’s

just Basic American Daylight nothing high-tone but

calm, fair, and familiar. I was up taking mom’s 

calls. She was worked up  over having two dollars left.

They’re out of print, two dollar bills. It’s a twenty.

She can’t read numbers. She has said for seven years 

she’s buying a gun  tomorrow, but she’s

always out of money and now this room is 

spilling over with day on its way to hers again.
