*scott and stiles just abandoned allison and peyton at the party, and derek shows up with the offer of a ride and a lie*
After dropping off Allison, Peyton and Derek sit in silence for a few moments. Peyton tries to find something, anything, to say. There’s something about the guy beside her that makes her want to talk to him, even though her head is telling her “he’s bad news” and “you can’t trust him”, especially along with everything that Stiles has mentioned. But there’s also something in her gut that is telling her he might not be the bad guy here. She doesn’t understand why, and she also doesn’t know which part of herself to listen to. With everything going on, this really isn’t the time to take any risks.
Peyton flinches, not thinking he would be the one to break the silence.
“What makes you think that?” Peyton throws back, attempting to remain cool but the shakiness in her voice betrays her. She also refuses to look at him
Derek scoffs, but he chooses not to comment on her obvious tells. “Your heartbeat. It’s fast. Really fast.”
“Okay that’s creepy,” she can’t help but let out a laugh, finally facing him, “You do know that was creepy and that this whole creepy, mysterious vibe isn’t helping you out, right?” When he doesn’t say anything she sighs and continues, “What do you know about Scott? Come on, I know you know more than we do.”
“Then you should let me handle it.” Derek finally counters.
Oh, my God, Scott is definitely a werewolf.
“Why can’t you at least tell me what your plan is? Huh? I know you have one- driving Allison and I home and all.”
“How do you know I’m not just being polite?”
“Oh, so you’ve got jokes now.” Peyton deadpans, “Funny.”
Derek shakes his head, “Listen. Things are happening to Scott that he doesn’t even understand and I’m trying to help him. Telling you puts that at risk. You’re just going to have to trust that I have everything under control.”
Despite his tone, and everything else about him, Peyton thinks Derek might be telling the truth. For whatever reason, once again, her gut is telling her he might be the only one that can help her friend.
“Okay,” Peyton nods her head, “I trust you.”
This is the first time Derek visibly reacts to something she’s said. His eyes widen slightly in surprise.
“Yeah,” she nods again, “Despite everything my friend and the voices in my head have said, for some reason, I feel like I can trust you. Does that surprise you?”
Derek finally looks at her and when their eyes lock, Peyton realizes the reason he seems so taken back is because she is the first person to do that. To trust him. Just as fast as he looked at her, he looked away.
Before she knew it, the car was slowing down and when she glanced out the passenger window, she realized they had made it to her house.
Peyton once again turns to Derek with narrowed eyes, “You know where I live?”
Peyton could have sworn he almost smiled, but she wouldn’t bet on it. Biting back a smile of her own, she replies, “Until you make me regret it.”
After unbuckling her seatbelt, she reaches for the door handle, pushing it open before turning back to Derek again, “Promise me he’ll be okay.”
Derek only nods once, which doesn’t completely reassure her, but she doesn’t think Derek is someone to worry about. She slides out of the car, thanking Derek to receive another nod before she shuts the car door. In the blink of an eye, he’s speeding off and disappearing down the road. She stares off in the direction of his car, a nervous feeling swirling in the bit of her stomach. She doesn’t know what’s going to happen next, but she knows nothing’s going to be the same.
Faintly she hears someone yelling her name behind her. She doesn’t register it until a presence appears behind her. Spinning around, she realizes it had been Stiles calling her name, jogging up to her out of breath. Before she can get a word out, his arms are wrapped tightly around her.
With his head buried in her neck, Stiles mumbles, “Thank God you’re okay! When I realized you were with Derek, I thought-“
Pulling away from his embrace and trying not to linger on the thought of it, Peyton rushes to reassure him, “Stiles I’m completely fine! Derek’s…okay, I think? I mean, I don’t think he’s a threat.”
Stiles’ brows further, not believing her, “Well Scott doesn’t think that and I’m pretty sure he’s going to go full wolf on him.”
Peyton is forced to truly comprehend the fact that her best friend is indeed a werewolf in less than a millisecond as there are more pressing things to focus on. “Okay, well we need to find him then!”
“Glad we’re on the same page, let’s go!” Stiles grabs her hand and hurries her over to where his Jeep is parked.
