in terms of magic, she's got a very interesting mix and a background that almost no one else has. not because of being a watcher, but because since leaving the watchers, it's become a trial by fire and she's had to develop strategies and uses of her magic that are more unique, especially when going against other, sometimes more powerful, mages. part of the (debatable) ‘solas will never see you coming’ strategy that varric has.
so, at her base, she has a very strong educational foundation from the mourn watch. i still need to do a full scale meta on this, but nevarra also has circles and i treat the circles as the first rung of education, like going from kindergarden to highschool. from there, mages can choose more specialised paths (like degrees) and, if they're accepted (EDIT to add the mourn watchers apparently have trials, and they're scary, so have to pass those to get into the system, and i'd guess the other factions have trials too in that case), the studies continue. yes, it may not actually be like our real life education systems but with nothing else to go on, i'm basically using pre-med/medical school & residency/specialisations.
it can take up to 20 years just to become a heart surgeon, and i feel like that's pretty apt for looking at how long and deep the magical training runs. like, it taking 20 years just to become a full fledged mourn watch necromancer, with then additional papers, research, studies needed to then become a senior watcher. it's a lifelong dedication - in the game you can even say ‘a watcher’s duties never end' and it's true. of course, the older and more experienced you get, the more freedom you have, you can start teaching and travelling and all of that, but it's still. lifelong. in my head/how i approach it.
all that to say, she has a very strong foundation in magic and a strong foundation in necromancy, but she is far from mastery. (quick segue to also highlight she leaves the mourn watch at 34 and spends 3 years away and, for the most part, not doing necromancy. it's too obvious, and makes her too easy to pick out, so she's quite rusty with it at the start of the game, and it only becomes her main after the treviso dragon attack for reasons that i will do a different meta about.)
in the game, you can get to mastery level spells (because of course you can), but a lot of those were developed, for her, under duress of the end of the world, and an experienced mage will be able to tell that it's like jenga. or duct tape. it works, it's there, but it's far from elegant and probably not the most optimised way to do it.
