Apartment (Tylum AU)
Wowie okay hi. So I was gonna write a music shop tylum AU (which I will) but this one wrote itself while I was listening to a song so…
‘The first time I saw you was in your apartment, I had followed my friends single file through the darkness. I looked your direction for a single inspection, and could not muster the courage to say a single word to you …’ -Apartment, Modern Baseball
Friday nights usually meant nights out, hangovers in the morning, and great stories to tell. Well, alright, so maybe that was before Calum moved across the whole damn world because his best friend had convinced him that it was a good idea. Somehow, for the past month all he managed to do on a Friday night was stay in, and wish to be back home where he could go to all his favourite places to be on a weekend. However, this night was different.
“Calum, you’re always complaining about being bored so get your ass up, we’re going out,” was all that was said before Michael was dragging his best friend, and roommate, out of the shitty apartment that they could barely even afford. “We’re going to a friend’s house, and we’re going to hang out, and it’ll be-”
“Fun?” Calum huffed softly as he shoved a beanie over his unruly mess of curls that were still just a little damp to where you could tell that he had taken a shower recently.
Fifteen minutes and an argument over who gets to control the radio, the pair had arrived at an apartment just slightly better than the one that they were sharing. “Alright, so you’re gonna like this guy. His name’s Ty-” Michael’s words were cut off for the second time that night when the door was opened before either of them even got the chance to knock.
“Michael! Hey man, I was worried you wouldn’t make it.”
Calum had ended up blocking out the whole greeting the moment he saw the bright smile coming from the person that he had unfortunately never got the pleasure of seeing before the door had opened. It wasn’t like he was drooling or anything, because he wasn’t…alright? He was just… taken aback a bit. Unfortunately for him though, he was so caught up in blocking everything out, and examining the guy in front of him, he hadn’t realized that anything was going on around him until Michael was pushing him inside of the apartment, and past the handsome door-opener. There were a few people around, most laughing with a beer or a slice of pizza in their hands, so its not like it would have been awkward for Calum except for one little detail. He had no clue who anyone was.
An hour later, after he had managed to find his damn social skills, Calum found himself on the couch engaged in a conversation with a girl who was friendly, but also too flirty to realize that he wasn’t staring at her, but at the guy from the door who was across the room from him, playing the guitar with Michael. “Hey, are you thirsty? I could get you a drink?” He asked as he brought his attention to the girl who only laughed as she held up her own drink, silently answering his question. “Well, I’m gonna go get myself a drink, it was really nice talking to you.”
He walked towards the kitchen only to almost stumble over a dog that he hadn’t even noticed. How the hell could he not have noticed a dog just laying about, havin’ a grand ol’ time? Magic, obviously. With his plan for a drink completely forgotten, Calum sat on the ground, greeting the pup with the brightest smile he could muster. There was really no secret in the fact that he had always preferred dogs over humans. “Hey buddy, you having a good time just chillin’ down there?” He mumbled as he moved down so that he was laying next to the dog who happily accepted all the attention that he was given, his tail happily wagging back and forth. “Yeah, I’m not really feeling like socializing either. I mean, except with the one hot guy Mike won’t stop fuckin’ talking to.”
“You enjoying yourself down there?” There was a soft chuckle followed after the words as Calum glanced up to see the same guy who he had been practically staring at all night smiling down at him with a raised eyebrow. Well, shit.
“Actually, I am. He’s a great listener,” Calum chuckled as he pushed himself up into a sitting position and smiled almost sheepishly. He watched as the other moved down to sit next to him, petting the dog easily with the same bright smile from earlier when he answered the door.
“She.”
“Excuse me?”
“The dog, she’s a pretty good listener. She tends to keep secrets to herself, not really talkative. Secrets like wanting to talk to hot guys though your best friend won’t stop fucking talking to him.” As he spoke, Calum could feel his entire face heat up at the words.
So he did hear what was being said. Fucking awesome.
“Oh, uh, yeah. Good because I bet whoever had said that wouldn’t want anyone to know,” Calum chuckled pathetically as he tried to turn the direction of the conversation away from the subject. He had already embarrassed himself enough when he spaced out at the door. “Calum. I’m Calum.”
“Yeah, we were introduced at the do- I’m Tyler.”
“Oh. Well, I knew that. It’s uh nice to meet you Tyler. I should uh, yeah I’m gonna go.”
Before Tyler even had a chance to say anything, Calum was up and headed towards the kitchen, mentally cursing himself. Had he not have royally embarrassed himself, he could have stayed there and wooed the pants of him. However, he was completely off his game lately. He had decided to just stay in the kitchen for a while until people started to leave. He had thought of maybe following suite, and just walking home, but he forgot his jacket, and it was raining. So, he just had to wait for Michael.
When he walked out, Tyler was laying on his back with the dog’s head on his chest by the couch, and Michael was laying on the couch, a guitar in hand as he strummed random tunes with his eyes closed. “Mike, I think I’m gonna walk home?” He called out as he leaned against a nearby wall, patiently waiting as all three pairs of eyes turned towards him.
“You don’t want to hang out a bit? Ty and I were probably just going to chill for a little longer.”
“No, I’m sure. Need to clear my head out. It was nice meeting you, Tyler.” He turned to walk out the door, securing his beanie on his head, and buttoning his flannel as he started walking back home. Not even two minutes later, he heard the door opening back up behind him, signalling someone following him.
“Hey, Calum? I just wanted to say I think you’re hot too, and that I hope you decide to hang out again soon,” Tyler called out from his spot inside the apartment.
Calum could see his smile, and the way that the light made his hair shine a bit as he stepped out a bit giving him the courage to answer back.
“Maybe next time it could be just us. We could make dinner or something.”
I did it. It’s shit…. and I lost where I was going with it a bit, but yeah… I did it. Also, I may write a second… I may not. If you haven’t heard the song Apartment by Modern Baseball, go do it because it’s good and the inspiration for it. If you like it or hate it or whatever…the fic or the song… you should let me know if you like. Okay bye.
Someone needs to stop me. Anyway…here’s some boyfriend!tylum on a road trip in mood board form because I’m a loser. Seriously tho I need to be stopped. @tyllum
