So I dusted off the old Pedaltrain and rebuilt my board with a true bypass looper thanks to @dony_milar at @tymguitars. Now I can use the monolithic Black Russian Muff without sacrificing half my board, run that old DOD Phasor without the muffled bypass signal, and chill out with the mid-song tap dancing. Orange is young, full of daring... Oh boy, working on this Fender Super-sonic, has been a mixed bag for me. I've wanted one of these (well the Squier model) since they first appeared in the mid/late 90's and, well, this is the first time I've been able to try one, and damnit it's a bit of an awkward little thing. PERSONAL OPINION AHEAD - I'm not totally bagging out the guitar, it does sound great, and has plenty going for it, but for me, there's just so much going on here that makes it more of a pain to play, than anything else. The balance of the guitar is completely shot. It hangs from the strap as though it WANTS to fall towards the floor face down, which is probably my biggest issue here. It also makes it very difficult to chord, or really index where you are on the neck because it just feels wrong hanging like that. On top of that, given the upside downsies body, with the toggle, on I guess the upper horn, you have only a tiny amount of strumming space between it, and the bridge, so it feels really hard to dig into chords with any gusto. I just felt really cramped up. Maybe it's just me? These are still one of my fave daft guitars, and with some simple mods, a lot of the problems could be ironed out, but I don't think I'll be rushing out to grab one. Starting 2018 off with a little bit of tweaking of one of my last jobs from 2017. Joe aka @teenslain was having some issues with his mij Jag, so we had it in for a setup, and shortly after it was out the door...and then back in. I don't always get things right (I'm only hooman after all) and after seeing why this had come back in, I felt a little daft that I hadn't noticed the problem straight away. The threads weren't holding fast on the grub screws, nor the height adjustments for the bridge itself, so a whole bunch of sinking had gone on. Threadlocker to the rescue. After getting the setup sorted again and holding fast, all that was left was to work a decent groove in the saddle of the bass E string, as Joe was getting some slippage prior to the threads giving out. As mentioned, I don't always nail it first time around. So damn new it was scary to work on! 2017 U.S.A Fender Stratocaster, straight from the showroom to the workbench for a little tweaking. I gotta say, these are pretty swell playing guitars, and the factory pickups are in the same boat.
