This was a particularly productive typography class. It was off to a slow start due to unpreparedness, which I was sadly a contributor of. I tried to redeem myself by offering to be the scribe as the class redefined what makes a successful type specimen poster. This was definitely a good exercise, I found that when the whole class worked together we were able to come up with a very clear and comprehensive list. I really enjoyed writing the class’s ideas on the board until I ran out of room on the right side. That was disappointing, it really took away from the organized look that had been established up until that point.

I enjoyed doing the critique of the other students type specimen posters. Having five whole minutes to simply focus on one piece of work and comment based on the criteria we had defined worked really well. I felt as though I was actual able to come up with some good feedback that was legit. It was also fun to simply get a good look at how everyone laid out their posters and observe the differences in everyone’s styles. Although the typeface must trump the designer’s own style, you can still see the personality emerges in each piece.

Looking at my own poster covered in post it notes I am both intimidated and reassured. I realize how much work I still have to do (it is fun work though, so I’m not too worried.) At the same time, I am comforted because I realize I am still quite a ways away from my finished poster. As it stands, I am still not overly excited about how it looks. I still stink it needs more work for it to look good. Certain components such as the sequences of numbers have a lot of hierarchy whereas elements such as the alphabets are lost. Also the childish looking illustrations aren't contributing to the sleek look I was hoping to achieve.
