TYPEQUOTE #4 // The time you enjoy wasting...
I don't know about you but I feel too often, we consider that any notion of 'wasting time' is a terribly bad thing. Heck, even I make myself feel guilty of that sometimes when I'm simply wanting to do nothing on the weekend but silly stuff. I used to beat myself up about it but then it dawned on me - it's not sustainable to be 100% productive ALL the time and plus, you need to live a little sometimes. Balance out the yin and yang - do something silly, watch that crappy tv show that you secretly love - but just don't get to the point where that is all that you're doing in life and free time.
So here I am, advocating for you to go waste time as long but as you're enjoying it as you do! With caution of course. And if you've planned out time in advance to waste - that's even better in my books ;)
I love catching up on my favourite tv shows (of which I have many), online window shopping and painting my nails. Actually doing the former and the latter at the same time is not uncommon for me! I consider all these things as a waste of time but I love doing them and it completely de-stresses me. I'd like to think that I do them in moderation. I hope? Okay so perhaps the tv element needs to be better handled but the rest, definitely!
So tell me, what do you enjoy wasting time on?
PS. The font featured in today's TypeQuote is Lane - the Posh version! I love Lane, it's a beautiful and simple type and comes with multiple versions of it. You can download it for free on dafont!
TYPEQUOTE #3 // It's not who you are underneath...
When I came across this quote, I knew I had to feature it here in a TypeQuote. Spoken by Katie Holmes in Batman Begins, I love the overall message of it: at the end of the day, its your actions that count the most. Make your life the best it can be by taking action to reach your dreams. And remember, there will always be obstacles and setbacks along the way, but that’s all part of the fun and games of the journey, isn’t it?
On a more casual note, how great is this font Corki? It’s super fun but serious at the same time. I’m not normally a fan of the slim font look but the serif character of this one balances it out really well!
Corki is free to download at TypeDepot.
Housekeeping-wise, you may have noticed a slight change in presentation to my previous posts in the TypeQuote series. I've decided to stop featuring illustrated heads as they're too time consuming that I found I was putting off posting simply because of that. My original intent for the illustrations was to give me an opportunity to practise drawing but I'm still doing that with the illustrations I'm doing for Gardenado, so that works out! In the meantime, I hope you'll still enjoy the inspiring quotes and awesome fonts in this series. If you have any feedback, as always I'd love to hear them - simply leave a comment below!
TYPEQUOTE #2 // You can't wait for inspiration...
Here's a new TYPEQUOTE edition to start the first new week of February!
The featured dude is Jack London, he's an American from the late 19th and early 20th century. I hadn't come across him as a figure previously, but gosh he's written a lot of books/poems/articles in his (relatively short) lifetime. Do you know of him? Apparently he was the pioneer of commercial magazine fiction - not bad! I haven't really 'pioneered' much in my life (just yet... here's hoping?) so this guy's already a high achiever in my books!
I introduce you to him today due to his wickedly direct quote about inspiration. Go after it with a club. Don't be waiting for it at your front door, because it won't just magically appear out of thin air.
It's often quite hard to be inspired when you need to be. The most frustrating scenario I've encountered numerous times is when you're trying to come up with an awesome sounding website domain name for something and.. You. Just. Can't. Do. It. But don't give up! Persevere and keep thinking about it. In the shower. On the train to work. When you're eating lunch. Harass your creative juices until it pops something awesome out that's perfect. Yep, that's how I came up with Helarious - so you can do it too!
Font: American Typewriter
American Typewriter is available free to download on uFonts.
I've had this font for ages, it's the perfect typewriter-esque font. Crispy clean with soft round edges, it's so versatile that you can pretty much use it for anything!
TYPEQUOTE #1 // Being a maker involves...
I'm so excited! This is something new I've been wanting to do ever since I had a small brainwave around Christmas time last year: a new series where I share inspiring quotes that really touch me, sprinkled with some graphic love and a font that makes me jump for joy! Let me now officially reveal the first of a new series: TYPEQUOTE!
With this new series, I get the chance to inspire and share with you all real meanings of life but in a fun way that also gives me the chance to improve my Illustrator skills. It's a win-win! Plus, a general celebration of font awesomeness (yes, that's a word). You'll also be able to check out the font I use and download if you love my font aesthetic just as much as I do!
For this inaugural post, I tip my hat off to Seth Godin. If you haven't come across him before, I suggest you check him out as he is a highly celebrated American entrepreneur and author of well known books such as:
Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable
Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us
The Dip: A Little Book that Teaches You When to Quit
... Oh and he is the creator of Squidoo! You can follow his twitter here.
I found his statement about people who are makers and how they compare to 'assemblers' really interesting. What differentiates you as a maker is that when you're "making" something, there is an element of the unknown and therefore, the possibility of failure - you may not necessarily succeed in what you plan to make.
I challenge you all to be less fearful of trying out and experiencing new things. If you have an idea, give it a go and see how it goes. Even if you don't succeed, you'll probably learn a thing or two that you didn't anticipate and that's how we grow as thinkers, creatives and "makers".

RiotSquad is available free to download on DaFont. I'm really digging this font type, it's a understated stylish serif font with just a touch of curvy to give it that unique boost!
