Heroes get tired too: a poem for my father

You lifted me into your arms and I believed that I was soaring 

You raised me up above the waters as the waves below were roaring 

To me You will forever be 

daddy , 

my superhero …

But heroes can get tired too. 

You’ve always been a fighter 

Determined, loyal brave and true 

To passersby, who do not know 

You seem abrasive and so rough 

But I see a tender heart within 

Scarred by a life that’s been too tough 

I know that you are tired ,

but I am sure you’ll rise again 

Together we’ll get  through this 

Just hold on tightly to my hand. 

Just hold on tight and don’t let go 

Never forget,

I love you so

I know my place.

Slowly, carefully I’d abide 

By what my heart knew to be true

Things I’ve learned by 36.

Life can change in an instant 

Time is fleeting 

Opportunities you thought you had can be taken away in a moment 

So live your life the way you want 

Other people’s perceptions of you do not matter outside of the few who really know and  love you for all that you are and can envision all that you can become 

Your self worth does not reside in other people’s opinions of you

People who really love you  do so because of who you are not what you can provide or produce 

Time is priceless 

Health is not a renewable resource. Take care of yourself 

The point of life is to love and be loved 

Family comes in many forms 

Cherish your real friends 

Tell the people you love why you love them 

Be kind to yourself 

Regret is a waste of time 

Some of the worst times in your life will lead to the best

love comes when it’s least expected

you do not have to be liked by everyone but do not tolerate disrespect
