Mainland China and Hong Kong have been feeling the might of Typhoon Ragasa lately and some people in the two territories have been using humour to cope with the terrifying ordeal.

How? By using photos of Hong Kong singer and actor Nicholas Tse as “amulets” to ward off the typhoon.

Why? Because of a play/pun on Tse's Chinese name 謝霆鋒 (🥮 Ze⁶ Ting⁴ Fung¹，🀄 ㄒㄧㄝˋㄊㄧㄥˊㄈㄥ/Xiè Tíng Fēng), which sounds exactly the same (whether in Cantonese 🥮 or Mandarin 🀄) as 「謝停風」, which means, “Thanks, stop the winds.”.

The "living amulet” himself was not spared the typhoon's battering however; he too had to brave through torrential rain at his recent concert for a solid two and a half hours, but, as a professional with a sense of humour, addressed the (equally brave) crowd midway through one of his songs by quipping, “Too bad I'm not called 「謝停雨」 (Tse Ting Yu)!”.

「謝停雨」 (🥮 Ze⁶ Ting⁴ Jyu⁵, 🀄 ㄒㄧㄝˋㄊㄧㄥˊㄩˇ/Xiè Tíng Yǚ) means, "Thanks, stop the rains.”.
