Cognitive Functions Stereotypes
This is a collaboration of previous posts about the cognitive function misconceptions and stereotypes.
The association with Fe and caring for others emotions is a common misunderstanding of the function. Fe is better described as the expression of feeling. FJs are talented in having an awareness of the atmosphere of a group, and conveying emotion to affect others. Therefore FJs have a strong sense of the values of other people, how outward displays of emotion can affect other people. FJs can have their own sense of internal values, and the difference between Fe and Fi is how they prefer to project emotions.
FPs and selfishness, static morals
Fi is often described as having a strong set of moral and values that are inflexible and unwilling to change. Because Fi is an introverted (subjective) function, Fi is the interpretation and evaluation of feeling that is not expressed outwardly (Fe), and this is why Fi is sometimes associated with “empathy”.
TJs are known for being pragmatic and strategic. While this not might not be an inaccurate trait of a TJ type, it does not explain the thought processes of the Te function and the reasoning behind it. Te types are skilled at developing methods that are efficient, and are concerned with how to reach the outcome they want to achieve.
Ti is mistaken for the aim to understand how something works. It is close to the definition of Ti, but the desire to learn is not introverted thinking. TPs want systematize logic from the external world and define why an object or situation leads to a result. They are not so much interested in yielding logical results but rather the consistency of these logical processes, which is why Ti is described as figuring out how something works.
Due to the grounded, realistic nature associated with Si or sensing in general, the worst stereotype has been associated with Si because of its linkage to the past. Many MBTI sources describe Si as a dependence of past experiences, and the ability of storing past data. Introverted (subjective) sensing is comparing a past situation or object to a present one. This is why Si is thought to be comfortable with the familiar. This does not equal tradition or memory however. Si as a function is more than a internal map of memories.
Extroverted Intuition involves realizing the potential and possibility of ideas, and therefore is sometimes described as the expansion of ideas (in comparison to Ni which is the narrowing of ideas). Explaining in this way does not help understand the differences between Ni and Ne. Idea generation and creativity are not the same thing, and any type can be creative.
It is fair to claim that extroverted sensing has a close attention to details and surrounding. Of all the functions, Se is the most concrete function, and has the best perception of realizing the actual object/situation for what it is. It seems to be the function that is least likely to be overwhelmed by sensory input. However, it is not accurate to describe intuitive types as always being in their heads and Sensing types as living in the moment, and type yourself according to that. Se is making an impact, and realizing whether or not an idea affects the the external world.
NJs are psychic and “just know”
Ni is commonly thought as have a gut feeling about a situation or experiencing “a-ha” moments with a sudden realization of the truth. Ni is seeing trends beyond the physical world, and connecting events that can anticipate the future. NJs have no difficulty in understanding how one event leads to another. Overall, the psychic stereotype is not too far off, and it is valid to relate Ni with foresight as long as the introverted processes can be understood and explained.
