I follow Glasgow's finest Rubadub https://rubadub.co.uk, they've had a bumper package of Wackie's reissues in. Among them this beauty. The original is a cover of Max Romeo's Rise Up from 1982, it's paired with what sounds suspiciously like The Police's 1980 track Voices Inside My Head which cut across genres, dub, disco, new wave, house, balearic, cosmic, hip hop...
The Tyrone Evans version is from his 1983 album For Lovers Only for Wackies. This extended version was issued on 10" by Names You Can Trust in 2012, it's a nice record, it has a new version on the b side by Greenwood Rhythm Coalition which is produced by their own E's E and Dj Monk One. The extended vocal was also put on Mr Bongo Record Club Volume Five last year. This new release on Wackies has a never released extended vocal mix and a dub by Bullwackie himself. Rubadub speculate Wackie's may have intended to put out a 12" version in 1983 as these tracks are from recently unearthed tapes. Take my money!
In a post Andrew Tate world the call to 'be a man' really needs looking at. Correct me if I'm wrong but the phrase 'Rise Up' is very significant, there's the famous Maya Angelou poem And Still I Rise, of course, but it goes all the way back to the slavery abolitionist movement, the time of Fredrick Douglas, emacipation rhetoric and the US civil war in the 1860s... the argument was for equality for all Americans so nothing held them back from rising up (it had nothing to do with being a man)
