LA Art Book Fair 2017 from this past weekend. Presented by Printed Matter, in conjunction with MOCA at its Geffen exhibition space in Little Tokyo. On paper, this fair sounds incredible. Purchasing work directly from artists and alternative spaces? Yes. Handmade zines, prints, special editions, artist books? Yes. Free and without prior reservation? YES. However, like most art fairs nowadays, these ideas are too good to be true. As my father wisely says, "Right string, wrong yoyo." What started as an "alternative fair" to the larger blue chip fairs of NY and Miami, has now turned into just that–too large, too crowded, too corporate. It was almost impossible to walk through the space, let alone actually approach a booth to see their merchandise. It's so big that one could be there literally all 3 days and still not see it all. And (for the most part) books are the main thing for sale. Books are intimate, personal, and detailed. You can't simply "window shop" for these products. You need to handle them, you need to read them, you need to process them. This is simply not possible anymore at this fair. I drove by earlier today (Sunday, the last day of the fair) and there was a line of at least 500 people that wrapped around the block just to get into the door. Hence, I reiterate: Right string, wrong yoyo. The "Nah Fair" that was in a building about a block south from the main fair was more suited to its purpose. It was smaller, didn't contain corporate funding and blue chip galleries, and it was possible to navigate yourself through the space and actually handle the works before purchase. The problem with overcrowding at fairs worsens every year. Yet, is it really a problem if something is too popular? Isn't that the point? But isn't the point to also be able to actually experience something without being squished and lost in the crowd? How can we, the art world, handle this dilemma? Should tickets be required? Should they have a specific time stamp for entry? Or does this defeat the purpose? I will say that the nice thing about this fair is the programming in conjunction. There was a performance by Miranda July, book signings from Catherine Opie, a tattoo booth, and then some. If anything, the events are what make this fair great. Does anyone have any further thoughts to this discussion?
Ride of the Day
Today’s Ride of the Day goes to Amy from Brisbane, Australia! Amy and her husband moved to Studio City about 2 years ago from Australia because her husband relocated for work. He is an artist and works in animation and she is an accountant.
Amy and I discussed our various travels and trips, including my recent road trip to Utah and her recent trip to Las Vegas. We discussed weather differences between Los Angeles and Australia, specifically focusing on LA’s recent rainstorms and the current dismay of our city’s infrastructure. Amy mentioned she has never seen or been to the snow in person–hopefully her desires to go to Big Bear in the near future will be realized!
This ride put me in a great mood and left me pondering a trip to Australia in the future...
