I knew there was a deeply personal reason why i liked this series so much, despite it not being translated until fairly recently: all the girls are bi lmao

joking aside (i’m not, they all are bi), it’s actually pretty relevant to me how Sensei hinted at the hyper classic road of “enemies to lovers” between J and Manami when she was introduced...

...only to actually turn it into “enemies to brothers-in arms and also please look after my adopted kid and help her avoid making the same mistakes as me in case i die” instead (spoiling but i’m sure no one else on this site reads it so i don’t care)

additionally, i love how girls are written in this series. All the girls, fighters or not.

Like, in a lot of writing by guys (keep in mind the series is from the 90s), our badass hero with a vengeful objective may have scoffed at a woman being sent after him or would have simply guessed she was not going to be a big deal, but actually... in this series, J witnessed Mido kill gangsters one evening and he’s like “wow, she’s probably even better than me”. Simple fact, no colored judgement.

so the initial conflict opposing J to Manami doesn’t weigh in the whole man vs woman comparison, it’s just pure skills: she’s after his ass? well, that must be because she’s good enough (and so he witnessed by himself!), otherwise they’d have sent somebody else. And they have rather hilarious fights as a result.

Same for the girls who don’t fight: their lack of combat skills doesn’t mean they’re less interesting or weak, compared to the women who fight, or even to men. They just have different skills, bringing their fair share to the plot or developments.

Also in the end, the protagonist chooses a partner who shares the same aspirations as him, it’s not about “i need to protect her” or “she has my back”, it’s “we see the world the same way so we built something together and i want to protect it with you no matter what”

it’s beautiful. 

it’s why i love this freaking 86-volume-long-between-3-series crossover so much.

Summary: Virgil and Remy got married for one reason, and one reason only: Tax Benefits. More specifically, Virgil’s FAFSA application. They’re going to get divorced as soon as the application is confirmed. But for right now, married life doesn’t seem so bad.

Chapter One

“I do.”

When Virgil and Remy agreed to get married, they knew they were going to have to kiss each other to be able to prove the legitimacy of their marriage - especially considering the circumstances - but it wasn’t until the moment was there before them that they really had to confront it. Though Virgil hesitated, not knowing how to feel about kissing his best friend, Remy was never one for hesitation. They reached up to the taller male, fingers entwining in his hair, and pressed their lips to his. 

The click of the camera could barely be heard over the clapping of hands from the friends and family who had attended the wedding. But as soon as they heard the click, Remy pulled away from Virgil’s lips and grabbed ahold of his hand, raising it up in the air like they were about to give a bow at the end of a play. 

Virgil had first approached Remy with the idea a year ago when he realized that he wouldn’t be able to apply for FAFSA because he didn’t have any contact with his parents, he was unmarried, and under the age of 24. 

He had texted his best friend, whom he had known since toddler day-care days, and had proposed probably the best idea he had ever had.

Virge: will u marry me?

Rem: ??? what?

Virge: i need to get married 4 my fafsa

Rem: bitch you know id do anything for you but…

Virge: we can get divorced right after my application goes through i just need the loans

Rem: …

Virge: cmon please

Rem: alright bitch but we gotta make it seem legit or well get sued for tax fraud

And so the plan was concocted. Virgil and Remy had spent the last year planning out a legitimate wedding, which Remy’s parents agreed to pay for. Nobody but the two of them knew about the illegitimacy of the wedding. Everyone - from family to friends - thought that the two of them had professed their love for each other and decided to get married. 

A lot of people had thought they were dating beforehand, given how close their friendship was, so it wasn’t too much of a surprise for most. 

And the day was finally here. As the newlyweds walked back down the aisle to exit the chapel - not either of their first choice in venue, by the way - there was only one thing on Virgil’s mind. 

I did it. I get to go to school.

The rest of the night was pretty enjoyable, honestly. Virgil and Remy danced around the reception hall, talking with their friends - who all congratulated them, claiming that they knew all along that they were together - and eating from the buffet that Remy’s huge family had brought.

In no time at all, Remy and Virgil were getting in their Uber to go back to the house that Remy had inherited from their grandma with the condition that they never sell it - otherwise they would have done so in order to get Virgil his college money. 

Remy dropped the keys to the house not once but five times before they agreed to let Virgil just unlock the door to the house that the two of them would be sharing now. Each time they had dropped the keys, they had nearly fallen over trying to pick them back up, dissolving into a fit of giggles that lasted a good couple minutes before they were steady enough to try again. The entire ordeal took so long that Virgil was shivering and hugging himself for warmth, getting increasingly frustrated by the second. 

It was never fun being the sober one in a situation. 

But it didn’t matter now. 

They were home, and they could finally settle in for the night. 

It was a lucky break that the house had two bedrooms. Virgil wouldn’t have to worry about sleeping in the same room as his new “spouse” every night now. He knew he would still have to have some of his stuff in there so that if anyone from any agencies came to check things out, their marriage would seem legitimate, but he would worry about that in the morning when they left to go get the rest of Virgil’s stuff out of his aunt’s house. 

“Welcome home, my lovely husband,” Remy slurred. This was probably the drunkest Virgil had ever seen them, and he had attended the other’s twenty-first birthday party last month. “This is the living room--” 

“Rem,” Virgil said with a roll of his eyes, shrugging off his tux jacket and undoing the tie around his neck. “I’ve been to your house before. Can we please just go to bed? We have an early morning tomorrow. My aunt wants my stuff out before noon.”

With a dramatic and out-of-character pout on their lips, Remy huffed. “I guess.” 

Both of them made their way down the hall to the two bedrooms at the end of it. Virgil was already in his room when he heard a pretty solid thud across the hall from the other room. With a sigh, he turned right back around and headed towards Remy’s room, only to see the other laying on the floor, looking like they must have fallen over. 

“Help?” they giggled, raising a hand up towards Virgil. 

“What am I gonna do with you?” Virgil mumbled lightheartedly as he helped them up to their feet, supporting them with an arm around their waist. They were in bed in no time, and Virgil pulled off Remy’s shoes and undid the tie around their neck - surprised it was still even on - before pulling the covers over them. 

“Night, V,” Remy yawned, rubbing at their eyes. Virgil ruffled their hair and headed back to his room. 

“Night Rem.”
