UFC Fight Night: London Free Fight - Alexander Gustafsson vs. Vladimir Matyushenko - SciFighting
UFC Fight Night: London Free Fight - Alexander Gustafsson vs. Vladimir Matyushenko has been published on http://www.scifighting.com/2014/03/05/26963/ufc-fight-night-london-free-fight-alexander-gustafsson-vs-vladimir-matyushenko/
UFC Fight Night: London Free Fight - Alexander Gustafsson vs. Vladimir Matyushenko
Before Alexander Gustafsson talks on finisher Jimi Manuwa in the main event of the UFC Fight Night 37: London card, watch him work his way to a title shot as he fights Vladimir Matyushenko at UFC 141. Gustafsson would go on after this fight to win two more in a row, against Thiago Silva and...
UFC 141: Lesnar vs. Overeem Weigh-Ins // Donald Derrone & Nate Diaz staredown
UFC 141 Lesnar Overeem Main Card Preview
The UFC ends a roller coaster of a year with one of its biggest PPVs of the year. This might be its biggest card since UFC 129 in Toronto. Headlined by two of MMAs most contentious personalities.
Brock Lesnar has always been a controversial member of the MMA community. Some hate him for what they see as a easy ride to the top of the UFC others love him for his personality and sound bites. This same love him or hate him dynamic can be found in Alistair Overeem who some think is the greatest heavyweight on the planet while others see him as nothing more than a overrated can crusher.
Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem This fight is really easy to breakdown. Either Brock Lesnar gets a takedown or he will most likely lose the inverse goes for Overeem.
With his last fight being over a year ago and giving birth to several gifs Brock Lesnar has a lot to prove in this fight. Lesnar has been put up there next to Forrest Griffin for running away from a fight. This has led to the assumption that Lesnar has no chin and hates getting hit in the face. No one probably likes getting hit in the face but has everyone forgotten the beating Lesnar took at the hands of Shane Carwin? He may not like it but Lesnar can certainly take a punch.
Overeem also has a bit of suspect chin. Look at his TKO loss at K-1 World Grand Prix 2009 Final to Badr Hari,or his 6 other knock out losses.Overeem has excellent striking but if you catch him with a big hook its likely you could drop and finish him.
Lesnar can rush forward and cover up enough to get close to shoot in for a takedown. Lesnar dosen’t have the most technical wrestling but his power helps him run people to the ground. Shooting in will be the dangerous part as Overeem posses a good guillotine with his long massive arms.If he is able to get him to the ground though Lesnar is good enough to get stick to his opponet move to half guard and work consitant small ground and pound. Lesnar will want to break Overeem on the ground, forcing him to carry his weight and punch him in the face.
As simplistic as Lesnars gameplan is the same goes for Overeem, don’t get takendown. Overeem has a massive striking advantage on the feet and in the clinch. If he is able to clinch with Lesnar he can rip him up with body shots and those massive knees he used to manhandle Todd Duffee. Also in the clinch he can take the fight to the ground by tripping or just throwing Lesnar down. If he is able to get the fight to the ground strikes from the top would be very effective. Both Lesnar and Overeem have massive physiques and while aweinspireing it dosen’t exactly allow for fluid grappling and Lesnar off his back isn’t likely to throw up a triangle.
Its simple plans for the both of them its just a matter of who can impleament theirs first.. Lesnar can wade in and take a shot to ram Overeem to the ground. His conditioning should keep him going for 3 maybe for rounds. Winner:Brock Lesnar
Nate Diaz vs. Donald Cerrone While the main event will feature over 500lbs in the cage its co-mainevent will be decidedly lighter. Lightweight striker Donald Cerrone will go for his fifth victory inside the octagon this year by taking on Stockton native Nate Diaz.
Diaz returned to the lightweight division after going 2-2 at welterweight. Diaz brings his older brothers boxing style of steady punches that will eventually just wear down his opponet. Like his brother Nate is also queit effective on the ground with 10 of his 14 wins by submission. Unlike his brother though Nate hasn’t found the consistancy of his brother going 3-3 in his last 6 fights.
The Cowboy burst on to the UFC lightweight division taking several fights on short notice since the WEC merger. This willingness to fight has seen him go 4-0 inside the octagon recently obliterating rising contender Dennis Siver. Cerrone has a measured and effective Muay Thai attack as well as a excellent ground game. Most of his 13 submissionvictories have come after dropping an opponet. He has also made improvements on his wrestling with his takedown defense being the biggest hole in his game.
These two mirror eachother stylisticaly. Both are excellent strikers and grapplers with Diaz having a bit of a edge off his back. The difference being how they prefer to attack. Cerrone throws a variety of strikes while Diaz is ever the boxer. Checking legkicks might be the difference maker neither of the Diaz brothers are known for doing that. If Cerrone is able to take away Nates legs and his mobility Cerrone can use footwork to coast to a decision victory. Nate won’t be shooting or kicking Cerrones legs out from underhim. Acclumation of body shots will slow the cowboy down.
Cerrones varied striking and ability to drop opponets and quickly take the back will be the deciding factors. Winner:Donald Cerrone
Jon Fitch vs. Johny Hendricks Jon Fitch gets no respect. Since losing to welteweight champion George St. Pierre has gone 5-0-1 recently battling to a draw with BJ Penn though many would argue he won rounds 2 and 3. He has done this all with wrestling and postional grappling that just shuts his oppnets down. Now he battles fellow decorated wrestler Johny Hendricks.
Hendricks has grown up under the Zuffa banner fighting 9 of his 11 fights in some form of the octagon. Hendricks brings a strong wrestling background and willingness to throw hays with his oppnent. He has admitted though to mental lapses in during his fights which can’t happen against a opponent like Fitch. Fitch is known for his wrestling but has a underated striking game that he can uses to set up his shots and backing his opponets to the cage. Up against the cage or in the octagon Fitch can grab on to his opponet and not let go until he is on top. On top Fitch can ride out a dominatn position workign ground and pound and just shutting Hendricks down.
Fitch is the more consistent tactician. He might not be the most exciting fighter but he knows what he is good at and dose it well. Winner: Jon Fitch
Vladimir Matyushenko vs. Alexander Gustafsson Gustafsson might casue Vladmir Matyushenko to have flashbacks to his fight with Jon Jones.
After running into Phil Davis Gustafsson started training at Alliance MMA improving his takedown defense though he can still be muscled around. Gustafsson can like his nickname really maul his opponents once he opens up. Using his speed and reach to keep Matyushenko on the outside shooting from to far away and than capitalizing on the positon will allow him to maul his opponetn.
Matyushenko despite being known more as a gritty wrestler has shown some power with a pair of TKO stoppages. He’ll need to land some of that power to stop Gustafsson. Clinching him against the cage could prove effective though not that entertaining.
Gustafsson has a speed advantage and can really turn things on when his oppoents are in a compromising position. Winner: Alexander Gustafsson
Nam Phan vs. Jimy Hettes Nam Phan has had a up in down run in the UFC since debuting on the Ultiamte Fighter. After losing a terrible decision to Lenoard Garcia and a hard fight to Mike Thomas Brown. Phan now takes on Jim Hettes a grappling stylist from the Maryland area.
Nam Phan brings a solid boxing game throwing straight shots able to get in on wilder fighters like Garcia. Phan also has a solid ground game not exactly phenominal but good enough to snatch a submission and keep himself out of trouble.
His opponent Hettes has a extensive background in judo and brazilian jiu jitsu. The Kid debuted against Alex Caceres and after a transition heavy first round was able to submit the former TUF contestant in the second. Hettes striking is stil developing his bread and butter is still clinching and getting the fight to the ground from there. Hettes is extremely activie on the ground constantly going for submission and keeping his opponet off balanced. While this is entertaiing grabbing at legs instead of improving position first can lead to more punches to the face with little to show for it.
If Phan is able to use footwork and punches to keep Hettes away and avoid the clinch he could win a decison. Hettes will go for the clinch and can take a shot to get it. Once there he can trip or throw to the ground and automatically go for a submission. Winner:Jimy Hettes
UFC 141: Spike and Facebook Prelims Preview
Finally the Spike deal ends with the final prelims special. It will feature a pair of decent fights with Pearson Assuncao and Njokuani Castillo. The rest of the undercard is complemented with a couple of good match ups and returning faces. The Dongger Dong Hyun Kim takes on Sean Pierson on the undercard if Kim has one of his typical performances I wonder if he will see a main card fight ever again.Former TUF winner Efrain Escudero will also return to the octagon after failling hard in his first UFC run.
Preliminary card SpikeTV
Ross Pearson vs. Junior Assunção Pearson makes the drop down to featherweight after a solid run at lightweight since winning the Ultimate Fighter. His opponent Assuncao recently returned to the UFC dominating Eddie Yagin over all 15 minutes.
Pearson brings good boxing and surprisingly good takedown defense, able to hang just about in any situation. Assuncao is skilled on the ground and could submit Pearson if he is able to get him to the ground but his takedowns aren’t the strongest meaning he’ll have to clinch or knock Pearson down. Standing Pearson has the better boxing and can mix in kicks well enough. Assuncao has decent stand up as well but Pearson can put combinations together better and has fought better competition while he was away from the UFC. Winner: Ross Pearson
Anthony Njokuani vs. Danny Castillo Castillo makes a quick turnaround after stopping Shamar Baley by filling in for Ramsey Nijem. With the loss of Nijem Njokuani gets a much tougher style match up.
Castillo training out of Team Alpha male brings like most Alpha Males good wrestling and front headlock. This is a bad match up for Njokuani who is far more adept at striking than grappling and scrambling. Most of his losses in the WEC and UFC came to wrestlers like Ben Henderson and Shane Roller. Both were able to get him to the ground and submit him with a choke. No reason why Castillo can’t take Njokuani down and take the back or grab a guillotine. Winner: Danny Castillo
Preliminary card Facebook
Dong Hyun Kim vs. Sean Pierson Both Kim and Pierson can work in the clinch with Persons greco roman background and Kims training in Judo. Kim is really good at dragging these fights if need be to the ground and smothering his opponent with quasi standing top control. From top control Kim can rain down elbows and hold Pierson in place. Person has solid power and if he can blast early and follow up he could stop Kim but even with his background in wrestling, grappling with Kim could lead to him to his back. Working a wrestle boxer game keeping away from Kim would be the smarter movie. Winner: Dong Hyun Kim
Jacob Volkmann vs. Efrain Escudero Christmas faces Efrain Escudero after TJ Grant fell out with injury. Turns out the chiropractor is more excited about taking on Escudero who he claimed rubbed him the wrong way while cornering a fighter at a local MMA event in Miami, Florida.
Since falling well below expectations Escudero has gone 5-1 on the regional scene. Welcoming him back to the octagon is a tough fighter in Volkman who like fellow lightweight Nik Lentz is known for taking his opponent down and grind out a decision win. Escudero has been muscled around by less physical fighters before and Volkman won’t be scrambling for a submission like Charles Olivera. Despite a majority of his wins as submission Escudero dosen’t have a great bottom game and will have to force a scramble to get Volkman in a tough spot. Winner:Jacob Volkman
Matt Riddle vs. Luis Ramos Few men can claim to have fought all of their career in the UFC. That comes with some advantages and disadvantages though. Riddle has largely fought more experienced competition while having to mature as a fighter extremely quick.
With a full training camp with Nova Uniao Ramos can come into this fight more prepared. Ramos has mainly fought across Brazil and has developed a solid game all around nothing amazingly exceptional in any area. Riddle while a talented wrestler is still picking up the finer points of striking could take the fight to the ground. Ramos trains out of Nova Uniao though perhaps equalizing the situation. If Ramos is able to keep things standing and sweep to the bottom a decision isn’t out of question. Winner:Luis Ramos
Manvel Gamburyan vs. Diego Nunes Gamburyan returns after once again injuring his shoulder forcing his fight with Nunes to be moved to UFC 141.
Nunes has solid all around game but his defensive wrestling is his weak spot. Still Nunes striking his quick enough and accurate to tag Gamburyan while he tries to get in close and clinch. Gamburyan has solid power in his fist but his boxing overall isn’t that technical throwing more heavy strikes than anything. In the clinch though he can dirty box and trip the fight to the ground and control from the top. On the top though he will have to dodge Nunes submission attacks. If Gamburyan can stay around till the third round he could capitalize on a tired Nunes who has slowed down fights go on. Winner: Diego Nunes
What 2 Watch: MMA December TUF Finale - How Are You! New Year! 2011.
12/2/2011 - Tachi Palace Fights 11: Redemption North Americas home for top flyweight action returns with Tachi Palace Fights 11: Redemption. Regional MMA is a dime a dozen but this is one of the better ones. Injury bugs happen and it has bitten TPF11 bad. Flyweight champ Ian McCall has been forced to withdraw leaving the Karakhanyan DeJesus fight as the main event.
Bellator veteran and Riverside native Georgi Karakhanyan takes on Issac DeJesus for the vacant featherweight title. At Bantamweight Ulysses Gomez fights Cody Gibson. If that doesn't get you interested though Bubba Jenkins, 2011 NCAA Div champion at 157lbs will make his mma debut (see him win said title here). His opponent Jason Williams will also be making his MMA debut and wrestled collegiately at Iowa State.
It should be known that the Tachi Palaces internet is atrocious which makes streaming these cards tedious at best. Still all of the fights are up the next day on Sherdog.com and look fine. I highly recommend reading this great feature on Ian McCall written by Sherdog administrative editor Jordan Breen.
12/3/2011 - The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale Well this is the end. The finale of another season of The Ultimate Fighter and the final one crowned on SPIKE TV. This season has been a return to form for TUF which has looked a bit long in the tooth lacking interesting contestants and myriad of other issues. Who knew having two new weight classes would make the talent you know GOOD. Coaches Jason Mayhem Miller and Michael Bisping will square off in the mainevent, it will be Millers UFC debut.Aside from the two tournament finals the most recent TUF winner Tony Ferguson will take on lightweight veteran Yves Edwards. The feather and bantamweight finals have yet to be decided but this post will be updated when they are announced.
12/10/2011 - UFC 140 - Jones vs. Machida What a 2011 its been for Jon Jones. He goes from fighting Ryan Bader beats him, replaces injured teammate Rashad Evans destroys Shogun Rua and than defends his newly won title against Rampage Jackson. If he gets by Machida he might just set a new standard for fighters. Yea Machida is getting this after crane kicking Randy Couture into retirement but this is a interesting style match up, one that has been much talked about it on various message boards. The Nogueria Bros fight also taking on Frank Mir and Tito Ortiz which should be solid fights. Big Nog has once again rejuvenated interest in his career with his TKO over Brendan Schuab. Mark Homonick and the Korean Zombie Jung Chan-Sung will also battle it out.
12/17/2011 - Strikeforce - Melendez vs. Masvidal “Like sands through the hourglass so are the days of our lives”. This will most likely be the final Strikeforce card on Showtime with the contract ending in February there are rumors of a card in January but nothing has been annouced. I look forward to this card and the absorption of Strikeforces talent into the Zuffa hive mind.
Top 5 lightweight Gilbert Melendez comes back after absolutely destroying Tatsuya Kawajiri, this time defending his title against Jore “Gamebred” Masvidal. Masvidal might not be the most well known but he is a tough dude with good boxing and decent wrestling. When Strikeforce is gone there might not be a major platform for top womens MMA fighter Cristiane Santos to ply her trade and well kill a bitch. Her beat downs are vicious and o so entertaining. Gegard Mousasi and Ovince St. Preux battle it out at light heavyweight, possible for the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight title. If its 3 rounds or 5 this is a interesting stylistic matchup. If there was a card for Strikeforce to go out on this isn’t a bad way to go.
Dream - Fight for Japan: How Are You! New Year! 2011
12/30/2011 - UFC 141 - Lesnar vs. Overeem We close out another year in MMA with another heavyweight title fight billed as the biggest ever!!!Former Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar returns after having one foot of his colon removed due to another bout of diverticulitis. He gets a lot of crap on the boards but other than his first fight he has been fighting top 15 competition the rest of the time. He welcomes Strikeforce Heavyweight,2011 K-1 Grand Prix Champion and DREAM Heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem to the octagon.Overeem looks like a freak of nature just YouTube his fights. The winner of this fight will battle newly crowned heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos sometime in 2012.
The rest of the card has some fun match ups on it like Donald Cowboy Cerrone vs Nate Diaz, this will be Cerrones fifth fight inside the octagon since coming over earlier in the year with the rest of the WEC crew. In that time he has built a nice little fan base for himself.Jon Fitch should be fully healed from a shoulder injury and takes on Johny Hendricks, owner of one of the nicest beards in MMA.Alexander Gustafsson gets a nice step up in competition after his mauling of Matt Hamill by taking on Vladimir Matyushenko.

NicktheFace just running circles around the UFC hypemachine
12/31/2011 - Dream - Fight for Japan: How Are You! New Year! 2011 It wouldn’t feel right if there wasn’t some sort of crazy bombastic fight card coming out of Japan. Its been a tough year for the JMMA with DREAM being quiet for more than half the year but they are finishing strong. Most recently DREAM has joined the One Fighting Championship Network. This will see them co-promote events with OneFC in Singapore as well as share talent with the rest of the network.
The card itself is being co-promoted with Japanese wrestling legend Antonio Inoki and his IGF (Inoki Genome Federation) its pro-wrestling but more “shoot-style” look it up.
The MMA portion of the card is pretty solid you have the final two rounds of the Bantamweight World Grand Prix with Antonio Banuelos vs. Masakazu Imanari and Bibiano Fernandes vs. Rodolfo Marques and the winners fighting each other later in the night. Newly minted featherweight Tatsuya Kawajiri takes on Little Hercules Kazuyuki Miyata hopefully we see lots of suplexes. Shinya Aoki will take on friend and former training partner Satoru Kitaoka, the Japanese Joe Stevenson. The mainevent is looking like it will be DREAM Featherweight champion Hiroyuki Takaya defending his title against Lion Takeshi Inoue.
Fights of the Month
1. UFC Light Heavyweight Title Fight: Jon Jones © vs Lyoto Machida
2. Strikeforce Lightweight Title Fight: Gilbery Melendez vs Jorge Masvidal
3. Brock Lesnar vs Alistair Overeem
4. Tatsuya Kawajiri vs. Kazuyuki Miyata
5. The Feather and Bantamweight TUF finales
Thats not a bad way to end the year hopefully surrounded by family and friends. Looking ahead a new chapter starts for the Ultimate Fighting Championship with the beginning of there 7 year deal with Fox and their suite of networks. This deal will see them mainly on FUELtv,FX and “Big Fox” the broadcast station. The Ultimate Fighter which helped propelled those three words will have a new home in FX and the introduction of live fights. This deal also marks the end of “Facebook Fights” with the preliminary card of every UFC show moving to FUEL network with prelim specials on FX (like the current Spike prelims). The UFC is coming back to broadcast television January 28th in Chicago for a two hour 4 fight card on the Big Fox. According to Dana Whites Twitter they will be announced soon.
With UFC vacating SpikeTV that leaves room for freshly bought Bellator Fighting Championship to come on over, providing a couple of contractual requirements are met at worst they will be on Spike in 2013. Closing a see saw fifth season hopefully Bellator will take some time off and MOVE OFF SATURDAY NIGHTS any night would be better. The upcoming Season 6 will most likely feature a Featherweight (145) Lightweight (155) Welterweight (170) and Middleweight (185).
