Steven Moffat Appreciation Day Countdown 2014 November 14: Favourite friendship → The Twelfth Doctor and Clara Oswald It is very hard to define the relationship between the Twelfth Doctor and Clara. Of course, he is the adventurer and she is his companion, but what more? Are they just friends? Are they secret lovers? Is he her space dad? Sometimes it feels like a teacher took one of her pupils for a school trip. And all together, I think that their relationship covers, more or less, all of these aspects. And in my view, it’s one the things that makes it unique. The next is the way they influence each other. Yes, they help each other, but they change each other and not always in the good way, definitely not for Clara. Their friendship is toxic and painful, brings out issues like an addiction, lying to people we love or even betraying them. And that is what makes their relationship really valuable in my eyes - it is realistic. To me, it is the very best portrayal of a complicated relationship between two people we’ve seen so far on Doctor Who. However problematic their relationship might be, they can’t give up each other. It is, indeed, like an addiction, not only the adventures, but their relationship itself. Life would be so much easier if you liked the right people. But life doesn’t work like that.
