Every fandom had a ton of weirdness. I feel like Hannibal fandom is more deserving of a blog like this. I'm also very confused about the Hannibal post here. Also in the books Hannibal stabs Will basically Disemboweling him and later sends another serial killer after Will to disfigure him and kill his family.

i know that the hannibal fandom does have bullshit inside it but it is nowhere near the astronomical levels of the sherlock fandom

Hi I'm mod R of ughsherlockfandom!

I'm new, and I'm not the same person as mod C, who is the one who replied to that ask.  I was the one who published the submission, however.  (The caption was the submitter's, not mine, hence the lack of signature.)

While I certainly don't think the threat was real, the fact is that death threats like that can be incredibly intimidating and alarming, especially to people with anxiety disorders (like myself).  It's childish and hurtful behaviour, and it's stuff like that coming from individuals that gives people such a bad impression of the Sherlock fandom as a whole.  Our policy has changed since the ask you screencapped, as we no longer allow submissions to include the names of anyone involved, to keep them safe from threats.  The fact that people thought it was ok to retaliate that harshly in the first place sickens and upsets me, and I don't know about mod C, but I personally wouldn't want to have any part of anything that led to people getting harassed, even if what they said was hurtful/upsetting.  The only thing I want to do with the blog is point out how certain behaviours affect others, whether it's people acting in actively hurtful or offensive ways, or simply the kind of thing (like this incident) that turn people away from the Sherlock fandom and put them off watching the show altogether.  We don't hate the show, we don't hate the fandom, we don't even hate individual fans, we just hate the fact that offputting and hurtful behaviour runs so rampant that the fandom and the rest of the tumblr community and even the show itself are hurt by people's actions.

Hi mod R of ughsherlockfandom! Firstly, I think you are awesome for taking your time to submit this. And secondly, I am aware that ughsherlockfandom runs on submissions; I suppose I was just expecting some kind of consistency in the things being published in the sense that you would somehow acknowledge when they contradicted each other. However, I wasn't aware that you who published the submission wasn't the one who replied to the ask, so obviously that makes it different.

I agree 100% with what you say about death threats and I mainly reblogged the post because of the history this blog has with ridiculous public arguments regarding how online death threats should be perceived, initiated by the way a few self-proclaimed Sherlock fandom "haters" have reacted to things that were originally posted by ughsherlockfandom (see one example here) as well as how I originally responded to the screencap in question (see here).

But thank you very much for taking your time to write this; I appreciate it a lot and again, I agree with your stance on the behaviour in question. I am aware of most of the things you are saying about the blog you run, but I will leave this here for the sake of our followers, and for the sake of reminding people of the fact that death threats are never okay no matter how ~jokey~ they are and whether they come from someone within the fandom, or a so called "hater".

Also, don't say sorry, I know how that is.

bennaddict1987 should just calm down and stop with the 'ughsherlockfandom' whining. It's not going to help anybody and it certainly isn't going to change anyone. Don't waste your time and energy. People aren't likely to change their opinions.

Yeah. Seems like people have taken to use them (the mod) as some sort of scapegoat for stupid things that other people who don’t like the Sherlock fandom, or some of the Sherlock fandom, do.

I mean, I was initially kind of amused by the dedication that was put (mostly, I suppose, via submissions and asks) into “hating” harmless things and mocking people for no reason. But a lot of the criticism directed towards them is starting to get kind of arbitrary, and yeah, people should just calm down. I am personally more bothered by the notes to their posts than their actual posts, to be honest. Or used to be, at least. Haven’t really come across any of them lately.

I try not to judge people, but 'ughsherlockfandom' doesn't seem very mature to me. I don't understand how she can pretend not to hate the whole fandom, yet she thinks she has the right to say what is right or not. I left her at least five messages, respectful and to the point, asking her if she understood that she was hurting people with her posts. She only 'replied' once by taking a screenshot of different message and commenting ''OMG you moron''. Nice.

I don’t think I have ever seen the mod themselves say anything generalising or hostile about the fandom as a whole, but I absolutely do see how the blog can come across as hurtful in the sense that a lot of its asks and reblogs are pretty vicious and offensive and generalising towards fans of Sherlock, and that some of the submissions mock individuals for things that aren’t even wrong. And while I do understand how getting a horde of messages complaining about the same thing you have already stated over and over again is very annoying, I also get that this whole “but there is a disclaimer in the FAQ that will magically make your hurt feelings go away!” attitude can be pretty provocative to a lot of people.

Or, Points To Demonstrate How To Not Be An Asshole

Point Number 1: saying anything that amounts to "Fans of X are..." is stupid because you're literally making a statement about all of the people who love to read the books and/or comics, and/or watch the show(s) and/or movies; the only thing, literally the only thing, you can accurately say about that group of people is that they are fans.

And it's sort of redundant to say "Fans of X are fans of X" because, well, duh.

Subpoint A: this includes generalisations. "Most" or "a lot" still implies a great majority. Unless you have met every fan ever (and given that they've been around as long as art has, fat chance of that) you cannot say that most or even many of them do some thing.

Point Number 2: kinks. People have kinks. I'm asexual and have no idea why anyone does anything to do with sex now that we can reproduce using test tubes, and I still have a better grasp of this fact than most of you lot seem to do so. Shippers are allowed to write kinky things about their ship without having their sexual preferences shamed. Don't shame sexual preferences.

Point Number 3: don't hate on other fandoms or non-fans or non-shippers either. Seriously. It's not nice to be told what you like is bad, and it's not nice to tell people they're bad for not liking what you like. So don't do it. Actually, JUST DON'T SPREAD HATE.

Point number 4: don't make a blog dedicated to pointing out screw-ups of any specific group because it will make people feel that little twist of shame for being in that group, even if they aren't screwing up. And if you feel shame, you get defensive, and people who get defensive lead to rising tensions, and if you've ever studied history, that's how the World Wars began.

ALL ENCOMPASSING POINT: If whatever you're doing is offensive when based on RACE, GENDER, or SEXUAL ORIENTATION, it's offensive when it's based on FANDOM too.
