Halsin with all the orphans in the epilogue would not get out of my head. What if Astarion was one of them, orphaned after the events of act 3. I think he'd be an upper city baby, mostly cared for by his nanny (and cat).

Was talking abt this with weatheredlaw and love the idea that Gale sticks around Reithwin to teach the kids with budding magic how to control their outbursts, which are especially bad considering their situation...

Really though he's just dad 2.0 and he's there because I like him and Halsin together.
