Tsarevich Dmitry, also known under the name of Dmitry of Uglich, was the youngest heir of Ivan the Terrible. After the death of his father, the family was sent into exile by the regent Boris Godunov. Dmitry died at the age of eight in the city of Uglich, and his death was veiled in mystery. The news roused a riot in the city, but it didn’t help people uncover the secret of Tsarevich’s tragic end. Some of those events are depicted in the featured 18th-century icon.
