I was absolutely fascinated by how truly unique and fresh Hobo Johnson is when I came across the artist’s latest song and video, Uglykid, which features long time IHM favorite, Elohim. Apparently, we’ve been missing out on the alt hip hop act’s genre-defying music for far too long. Hobo Johnson, formerly Hobo Johnson and the LoveMakers, is from our neighboring town of Sacramento. He attained viral status with Peach Scone and other releases in the past, and he’s already gearing up for the arrival of a sophomore album named The Fall Of Hobo Johnson. New song Uglykid is a scratchy, dopey jam... a tongue-in-cheek, horn wagging delight on which Los Angeles musician Elohim lends her dreamy, saccharine vocals and likely much playful, plucky production prowess, too. There’s a lovesick puppy dog quality to Uglykid, on which Hobo Johnson shows he won’t hedge at teasing himself and laying it all out. I spent a profuse amount of time exploring Hobo Johnson’s other music after Ugly Kid reeled me in. Watch his passionate delivery as he performs his song Typical Story on Late Night With Seth Meyers below with his quirky band. Hobo Johnson and his band of musicians are equal parts theatrical and improvisational, it feels like. The truth probably lies somewhere in between, but there’s really no way to tell.
